Gamer - sand sculpture

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Before my son was born I was big into computer games and could easily spend hours being transported to fantasy worlds where I was the hero. My preference was first person perspective (FPS) and at that time I had probably played most of them start to finish since the genre started with Wolfenstein 3d.

Back then the graphics were pretty cartoonie but as the years went on and the graphic quality improved so did my immersion and addiction. The computer game industry knew exactly how to push my buttons and is now even bigger than the movie business for its escapism, with franchises of games released yearly. These games end up being pretty similar to the previous ones but still give that endorphin buzz you crave.

Two worlds in one

Every now and again a new game will arrive that takes the genre to a new level. I remember the game 'Portal' where you had to use a gun that make worm holes so you could to move around it world. While in the game I was totally transfixed trying to work out the puzzles but I began to notice that during my time outside the game my head was filled with the thoughts of being back in that magical world. I began to worry about my mental state. It is probably good that I can't play so much anymore.

Now with Virtual reality I'm sure the worry would be even greater. I'm not saying anything is wrong with gaming, just my love of it knew no bounds. I do still keep an eye on what is going on in that space and am amazed at how quickly it is developing. I hope to find a little time to get back to it some day. Everything in moderation.

what about the sculpture?

Anyway, after that lengthy introduction here's the tale of the sand sculpture. This was made for the Weston-Super-Mare festival. The theme was 'Games' and I was asked to make a piece about computer games as a photo opportunity. I decided on giving the public a front row seat in the sculpture which meant putting a wooden box inside the sand that they could sit on and have their snap taken.

The character is a depiction of me from a possible future where my son didn't come along and save me. I still have the balding happening and I give 'The facebook' the big thumbs down but never have the time to be immersed in the virtual worlds.

I'll stop here, as a picture tells a thousand worlds.

Bye for now

Sort:

Hypothetical future you got some serious man-boobs. I like the way you were able to do a smarmy t-shirt imprint just with the sand texture.

My moobies are already a thing of legend.

Brilliant sculpture as always. Love the photo too by the way.

Thank you Condra, I enjoy taking photos of my work. With this type of sculpture I am actually making the photograph with the sand.

Playing chase and dinosaurs is far better fun!

I must admit it's far more rewarding.

After the kneeling position a little rest ...

Your son will take you back to the world of video games and you'll have a good informant on what's going on.

True. I spend alot of time on my knees carving. Luckily I have padded knees.
I do look forward to when he's old enough to play a deathmatch. He'll probably beat me in no time.

Indeed that picture saids more than 10000 words. Good one also "Gravity" Thanks. Good idea to allow the public to interact with you art.
