Situated on the eastern foothills of the Box Spring Mountains in the University of California, Riverside campus, the University of California botanical gardens have a vast space of 90 acres. Upon such vast land, there are about 3,500 species of plants and flowers from all across the globe. As you pass through an undulating topography and many microclimates on a 4 miles long trail, you can reach the botanical gardens.

If you desire to visit the botanical gardens in the university campus, you need to realize first that the University of California is composed of two sections; one is the complete university campus, and other is the section of 40 acres that provide the land for a botanical garden. The visitors would also be amazed to see that the plants within the landscape of the botanical gardens perfectly adapt themselves to grow within the infertile and barren sands and climate of Southern California, Riverside.

The prime purpose of establishing these gardens was to foster the botany subject of the university and teach the students about the plant life, their habitat and the climatic conditions that are essential for each variety. Furthermore, these plants also serve as specimens for other subjects such as biology, ecology, classification of species in the plant kingdom, decorative gardening, anthropology, morphology, and photography.

The botanical gardens also provide the plant specimens for research purposes. So, in a nutshell, the University of California botanical gardens are primarily for educational use.

The gardens also provide habitat for birds, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians. Birds that reside within these gardens include kites, woodpeckers, falcons, mallards, swallows, and others. Mammals include skunks, bobcats, kangaroo rats, and squirrels. Reptiles range from gopher snakes to poisonous ones, lizards, and turtles. The amphibian section includes frogs, salamanders, and toads.
