5 AMAZING facts about our ocean!

in #nature7 years ago

The ocean makes up 70% of the surface of our planet earth and holds many unknown secrets. In the past years researches all around the globe tried to solve these and failed most of the time miserably, but still had one or another success. In the following I wanna show you 5 must read facts about the big blue ocean. So get your popcorn ready and enjoy the ride.

1… Underwater lakes (wait..what?!)

When seawater seeps through thick layers of salt, the salt dissolves and forms depressions in the seafloor. NOAA explains that dissolved salt also makes the water in that area denser, and as such, it will settle into the depressions. These underwater lakes and rivers, also known as brine pools, are similar to their land-based counterparts — they have shorelines, and even waves.

2… We have discovered just 5% of the ocean's surface

In fact, we have even more footage of the mars surface than of the ocean. The difficulty in research are the missing technology to reach deep grounds and discover them. There have been many projects to get to these deep levels of the ocean, but until now nobody was able to manage it.

3… The longest mountain range is under water

The Mid-Oceanic Ridge, is a 35,000 miles long mountain ridge which is totally under water. The mountain ridge goes through three big oceans, the Atlantic ocean, the pacific ocean and the indian ocean. On some points it is even higher than the Alps and it covers an amazing amount of 23% of the earths surface. Compared to it the Andes mountains are nothing.

4… 94% of life on planet earth is aquatic

This number isn't a joke. 94% of life here on planet earth is aquatic! That means just 6% are land-dwellers! An unbelievable number if you think about it. Because that makes us land-dwellers a really small minority.

5… Corals wear sunscreen?!

Coral reefs contain some of the most delicate ocean residents. Yet corals have a way to naturally protect theirselfs: "sunscreen." Over millions of years, corals in Australia's Great Barrier Reef developed protective barriers that help them survive in the sun, according to a statement by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
Scientists are already working to mimic the corals' natural sun protection. CSIRO scientists have worked with skin care company Larissa Bright Australia to create UVA/UVB sunscreen filters inspired by the corals' sunscreen code, the CSIRO statement noted.
