I am a coward, and I chose to study Medicine. This is why
Growing up in a Nigerian home, I knew that the only way I could make my parents proud of me was to become a Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer or Priest. But despite all the advice I got from people who knew better, I chose the most disrespected of the popular 4 professions this is why.

1. I’m too honest for my own good:
   I grew up in a church going family, so naturally I had it drummed into me that honesty is the best policy. Although I have had many good logical reasons to stop living an honest life, but I really can’t help myself. This frank honesty actually ruined my chances of becoming a lawyer. But it meant I would make a great Priest, a good Doctor or an average Engineer.
2. I’m terrible at maths:
   If maths was to be likened to a battle, algebra will be the LAND MINE, trigonometry will be the TANK and calculus will be the NUCLEAR BOMB, and I will be the frightened Brave but unskilled soldier. This is not to say I am lazy or something close, but it is just a truthful admission of my low level of tolerance for equations that make little or no sense. This obviously skewed my chances of becoming an engineer beyond the upper limit of (insert mathematical jargon) impossible. Leaving me with the choice to become a Priest or a Doctor
3. I’m a miserable sinner:
   I may be addicted to telling the truth, but that is not my only addiction. I still love the last creature created by God, I still patronise the wineskin on days when my sorrows or joys pile up. I still enjoy the use of words that neither uplift the spirit nor edify the mind. Thou knowest that a Priest needest not associate himself with such works as these. For they be the works of darkness and of an unclean mind. This left me with only one choice, to be a son of Hippocrates or to be a “regular human being”
4. I’m a pervert:
   I know it doesn’t sound right, but let us be honest with ourselves. What kind of person would decide to spend years studying to do a job that will entail him touching every part of your body? What kind of person will choose a job where their clients are naked most of the time? It is a sick job for a sick mind (me). As an extra bonus, this Job allows me to say trash while dressed in a proper gentleman’s clothing, and get paid for it.
5. I’m a coward:
   I know this sounds stupid, but my strengths and weaknesses could help me be a good photographer, massage therapist, pornographer, model, wrestler, actor etc. these professions address serious human needs, but I couldn’t even think about it, for fear of disappointing my parents. To me, those options where death, and I was too scared to stare it in the face.
   Before you start judging me for going for a profession where I could fit in with little or no effort, realise that there are many people like me. Every year, millions of students apply for medical school admission only to be rejected. This cowardice is making many of them keep trying year after year (wasting their life). But my message for all you cowards is to bravely go into other professions, even if you don’t fit in, stand out. Use your honesty, poor maths skill, dirty mind and sinful nature to make this world a better place.
