To tree or not to tree, that is the question.

Where once grew grass the shade caused by the trees have left just weeds growing and Staghorn trees springing up everywhere. Here in the UK our weather over the last week has been either too hot for doing much in the garden or showers meaning it's too wet to cut the grass/weeds.

So now I have all these little Staghorns growing. The tree sends out shoots just under the soil that then send up shoots that become new trees if not chopped back. While I do like the tree we have, this is becoming a problem so I'm reaching the point of do I have to chop the tree down. This would bring more light into that part of the garden and hopefully the lawn back.

Decisions, decisions....

I have the idea to plant a tree if just each person plant a tree each month ;)

We've planted around 10 in our garden since we moved in plus another 4 or 5 have self seeded so now need to decide if some need removing.

You garden need cleaning :D :O

The warm, wet weather means everything is growing like mad but I can't get out to keep it in check.

I got it bro, but i look your garden so i think it need to cleaning.

Decisions or die! Nice post! (;

To tree it is!!!!!!

yes, our cultivated imitations of nature...garlands at a set angle that never slip :)

Factors when considering whether or not to let a sapling become a tree in your yard:
1.) Will it be easier or harder to mow the lawn when the tree is at adult size? This includes shade area, trunk thickness, acorns/seeds, bark stripping, etc. Some trees emit a natural grass killer under their drip lines, making the area more muddy than usual.
2.) What type of leaf does the tree make, and will this make Fall/Autumn an unholy terror after the tree is at adult size? No joke, there is a world of difference between maple leaves, pin oak leaves, and sweet gum "balls" littering your yard. Especially if they blow into the neighbor's yard. Are you going to have to purchase a leaf blower and/or riding lawnmower to take care of the leaves? Do you mulch, or bag & take away? What type of seed falls when in the year? Do you have nearby ivy that will start to grow on the tree later on in its' life?
3.) What are the water requirements for your tree? Oaks go straight down with their tap roots. Weeping willows, on the other hand, will use their wide-spreading roots to clog any water source around for tens of yards! Some trees, after attaining adult size, literally die-in-place if they cannot find enough water to survive - pine and persimmon become 60-to-80-ft-tall hazards after just a dozen years.
4.) What birds & mammals will live in your tree? A few robins' nests is trivial every year. Opossums, raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks are another matter.

Hope this helps!

mmmm..
i think that is not tree.
