Our trip to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice, 1999.
There is nothing more magical than standing at the site of Stonehenge to welcome the sunrise on the Summer Solstice, it is something people have done for thousands of years right back into the days of pre-history. This was a surprise trip I organised for my wife back in 1999.
It was the first time in a few years that the site had been open to the general public to greet the sunrise and we were half way there before I told here where we were going.
It was about 3a.m. when we finally arrived at the site and were directed into the carpark, there were thousands of people there and still arriving and we joined in to the mass of people walking down to the site and the party atmospere that was building. Drums and other instruments were being played and druids in full robes walked through the crowds.
As the sky began to lighten there was quite a bit of cloud and mist covered the land around the henge but as the sun finally rose the sky at the horizon was clear and we witnessed the first rays of dawn as the crowd cheered it's arrival. We were told by a woman standing next to us it was the first time in years the sun hadn't been obscured by clouds.
That's one thing off my bucket list and with the Summer Solstice tomorrow I thought I'd share my old pictures (Taken on a camera that used film and needed developing so you had to hope you got the shot.)

This is awesome, and I'm so envious - that's on my bucket list as well.
Hoping that we can do it again at some point, the whole landscape around there is just so special.
I might be able to fit in a suitcase? LOL!
