The STEEM Machines: My Computer Split in Two!

in #steemit8 years ago

Back when I first started making real money from working on a VR game, the first thing I did was to buy a new computer. I wanted something tiny, so I ordered a mini ITX cube case. But I didn't know the difference between "mini" and "micro" and as such it was a size larger than I wanted.

I am bothered by stuff like that. It's a niggling irritation that eventually boils over. I also unwittingly bought a motherboard that only supported DDR3 ram, another mistake which grated on me. So, with the recent bonanza (in spite of the massive correction Bitcoin suffered I might add) I set some money aside to correct those errors.

My GTX 980, SSD and hard drive got transplanted into a Lenovo Idea Cube which came with its own mobo and 8 gigs of DDR4 ram. I will be adding a second stick soon, naturally. But what to do with the leftovers of the old PC?

The Lenovo came with a 1tb hard drive and an AMD RX480 GPU which is just barely good enough for VR. So I transplanted those into this smaller version of the case my old PC was in (the one I meant to order in the first place).

The idea is to have a second system as a backup so I don't miss out on one or more day's earnings if my main PC goes belly up, and also to use it for rendering video so it doesn't slow my main PC down. That prevents me from recording additional VR let's play episodes.

Now I have these two twin beasts, proof that good things come in small packages, one at either end of my desk. I could probably stack one atop the other like a totem pole if I wanted. Their names are Murdertrain and Caboose, since the one with the glowing Y on the front looks like an angry train, and I bought them with STEEM.

What's next? A laptop probably. I don't want to be glued to my desk all the time. 4 articles a day is a nontrivial workload which becomes a lot more manageable if I can hammer out an article on the go. But it needs to be VR capable so I can also do my VR let's plays away from home. More on that in the future.

First look , I was like that looks like a transformer :D that is SOO dope !

We both now have the same type of computers. Maybe just keep the old one as a back up , sell it ? Or just give it away

The bumble bee... Where is the PRIME?

Dual PC is the life. I like to keep one super clean and just game on it, and use the other as a workhorse. You could add a capture card and get a dual pc stream setup going.

I plan to, but it will have to be external as each one has room on the mobo for only one internal card. I was looking at the El Gato or the Roxio HD.

unfortunately none of the external cap cards are without flaw, you should have made room for this badboy https://solarisjapan.com/products/sc-512n1-l-dvi-component-hd-and-dvi-capture-board

You should buy a laptop to speed up your writing completion in steemit and elsewhere.

Write a habit that should be maintained, regardless of conditions and situations.
I myself try to keep writing and improve your writing skills. hehhe

Nice set up and good idea to back up second one

Alex - I am not an expert in this category... Never seen this type of casing before... I'm currently using HP ProBook i5 laptop... It's has high performance... Merry Christmas for you Alex...

I am a big fan of mini itx , I was always on the go though so I bought a laptop. I currently have a ASUS republic of gamers laptop, The only problem is there is no upgrading with a laptop. If I may give you some advise, buying a laptop with an ok graphics card and then buying a external case for a full size gtx 1080 or so would do the trick much better. So that way you could have all the power needed on the go and when you get home you have a fully working desktop basically.

Just looking at the first snap i thought its kind of a bag and its unique but when I started reading i was laughing at myself lol 😂😂 And its true big things come in small pakages. By the way all the best getting a new laptop, i m sure i can see how it looks 😁😁

A transformer! I should get a computer like this too. My desktop had a electric short inside the cabinet few days back so I am working on a laptop. But all basic machines, gotta get a beast like this.

Sorry to hear that, but good thing you had a laptop to fall back on. I gotta get myself one for the same reason.

Oooo this one looks super cool. Very mean!
