Lexicon of spirit animals: crocodile
Mode of life:
With the first finds being ascribed to the Triassic period 250 million years ago, the crocodile is one of the oldest reptile species in the world endemic to all continents except Antarctica and Europe. There are saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, while brackish water crocodiles can live in either of both. The main difference between species lies in their size; usually, saltwater crocodiles are much bigger and can grow to sizes up to 10 meters at a weight of 1,000kg, while freshwater crocodiles tend to not exceed the 2 meters. Crocodilians display salient sexual dimorphism whereby males grow much faster and larger than females. Even though crocodiles have webbed feet they don't use them to propel themselves through the water but to make sudden moves and turns, which is particularly helpful in shallow water. After mating, the female lays 30-90 hard-shelled and translucent eggs, with the sunlight being a vital aspect for the hatchlings' health because temperature can greatly influence their growth and survival rate. Female crocodiles are very protective of their babies, which is is why during the child-rearing period they are particluarly dangerous. As ambush predators that wait for prey to come close before they rush out to attack, they are able to even vanquish sharks or big cats. Their staple diet however consists of fish, amphibians and crustaceans. Generally, crocodiles are very stealth predators with refined senses. The average lifespan of smaller crocodile species is about 30-40 years, while larger ones such as the saltwater crocodile or Nile crocodile can exceed 70 years of age.

Spiritually light aspects:
Connecting with the crocodile facilitates the overcoming of fears to yield the healing of deep Soul wounds. Especially when it comes to self-perpetuating detrimental energies caused by trauma dating back to our early childhood and past lives, or even our ancestral lineage, the crocodile assists us in perspicaciously looking at the exact triggers and consciously choosing to let go with love in the knowingness that this is how we create space for more Heartful visions of joy representing our new sense of Self to take over. The crocodile teaches us that the collective subconscious is the focal point where visions and nightmares to the same degree have their origins; here, we rediscover our authentic sense of primordial faith under the premise that at first we muster the willingness to recollect and unify our fragmented aspects. The crocodile is an expert in casting light on where and when we feel unworthy, endowing us with the impetus to luminously transcribe our blemished self-image by sorting out distorted believes which resulted from exaggerated comparison. People with the crocodile as their spirit animal understand it to preserve their energy field by setting healthy boundaries.

Spiritually dark aspects:
Crocodiles stand for hypocrisy and uncontrolled primal instincts. The idiom "to shed crocodile tears" derives from an anecdote that crocodiles weep while devouring their prey. While this mechanism certainly isn't indicative of their emotional state, sure enough they don't feel remorse for their victim. With the crocodile as their spirit animal people are inclined to be insincere with their emotions to go through as a reliable friend while behind the scenes they enjoy taking the mickey out of very same person. Furthermore, crocodiles have a very high sex drive that makes them prone to letting their guard down, even fully abandon promises and duties, when being seduced. Within this awareness some people like to take advantage of the crocodile's instinctual helplessness for the sake of their own ulterior motives whereby even the crocodile's hope for sexual satisfaction usually falls by the wayside. Once the crocodile realises the farce, retaliation can be just as unbridled as its sex drive.
Much Love and Light,
Alex
