Lexicon of spirit animals: fox

Mode of life:

Foxes are nocturnal opportunistic predators and scavengers that can be found all around the world except Antarctica. The red fox has the widest distribution among all fox species, well known for its bushy fox's tail and luscious auburn fur. Foxes live hidden lives and preferrably hunt at night whereby under cover of darkness they even foray into densely populated urban areas. A fox's diet ranges from smaller rodents, birds and fawn to plants, berries and fruits. Thanks to high intelligence and shrewd senses they swiftly evade their chasers and drag part of the prey into their fox's den where they hoard food for the severe winter times. During daytime foxes like to seclude themselves into their den, which is usually built very close to dry and sheltered spots like overgrown burrows or groves. At the end of April the vixen bears 3-8 cubs which are being raised in well-padded subterranean hollows with several exits. Foxes are solitary animals knowing their territory and they have a very high habitate loyalty. On average they become 10-12 years old.

Spiritually light aspects:

The fox is a master of discernment, cunning and strategy. As the faithful loner that prefers to acquire experiences and insights on its own the fox nudges us onto the serpentine Soul pathways off the beaten track, for it is here that we come face to face with Soul travesties that need to be dissolved. The fox instantly knows when there is something fishy and never falls for deceit, neither in terms of looks nor false piety. By connecting with the fox we become experts in seeking out the Achilles heels in our own energy field and effectively leaching demonic influences from very same to attain profound healing. With their capability of swiftly and niftily adapting to unexpected circumstances foxes stimulate our spontaneity and endow us with the creative enrichment of our strategic leeway to forestall potential action paralysis. Furthemore, the fox advocates anonymity and deviation, inspiring us to stay true to ourselves instead of succumbing to peer pressure. Diversity is wished-for and we don't need to sacrifice our uniqueness in order to fit in.

Spiritually dark aspects:

With its honed ambush mentality the fox is inclined toward vested interests and insidiousness. As much as the fox is very loyal within its family, it exploits most relationships that go beyond this entrusted circle due to a deeply-anchored distrust in the world. As a rule of thumb, the fox never cooperates without having ulterior motives, irrespective of the other party's intentions. Yet more often than not, the distrust backfires on the fox, nipping community spirit in the bud so that when the going gets rough the compassion felt by and for the fox might be limited. If being practised relentlessly on a grander scale, such behavior will herald the demise of collective peace and sharing.
