Breakthrough quantum radio technology allows communication even under the water

in #science6 years ago

Scientists from National Institute of Standarts and Technology (NIST) have created a device that improves the usage of quantum radio communication.

The researchers have created a magnetic field sensor, working principle of which is based on quantum characteristics of rubidium atoms. The technology changes magnetic fields for modulation and frequency control, such as horizontal and vertical placement of wave signal shape. It allows to receive signals even deep under the water, under the earth surface and in rooms.

Signals with low magnetic frequency have been as well used before for underwater communication, but they allowed only to send text messages. What's more, submarines had to slow down and move much closer to the water surface - approximately 18 metres - to receive messages.

In order to communicate using low magnetic frequency signals, submarine has to be at periscope depth

In the future, scientists from NIST plan to improve their devices to make quantum radio communication work better as well as make a new device for geolocation using quantum radio technologies. At this moment such devices already exist, but the precision of locating is only 16 metres. The researchers plan to improve this parameter to 3 metres or less.
