MyEtherWallet split – what really happened to the popular Ethereum service

Disagreements between the founders of MyEtherWallet, which became known a few days ago, led to the appearance of contradictory and not always true rumors in the community. Nevertheless, the service continues to work under the same name and with the same user base, although without an officially registered company on whose behalf its activities would be conducted.

The story began to develop after the night of Friday, February 9, the official Twitter account MyEtherWallet without warning changed its name to MyCrypto. Many users suggested that the account was compromised, but it soon became clear that it represents the same product, and some developers have implemented the "fork" of the project and rebranding.

The tweet was published on behalf of Taylor Monahan (tayvan), one of the founders of the project, and also contained a link to a blog post that describes the history of MyEtherWallet until today.

However, the fact that the familiar site MyEtherWallet remained under the same name and did not mention renaming, could not but confuse many users. And given the growing number of different account hacks and phishing attacks in the crypto industry, the reasons for the alarm were understandable.

Taylor Monahan later confirmed that the My Crypto site is real by duplicating the entry on Reddit and signing it with a Keybase account. However, the next day another co-founder of MyEtherWallet Kosala Hemachandra presented his own version of the events.
"For reasons I cannot disclose, our partnership [with Taylor Monahan]was to be completed. However, yesterday during this process, MEW's Twitter account was changed from @myetherwallet to @mycrypto, leaving tens of thousands of followers perplexed. It was really unexpected, and I'm still trying to find an excuse and think about how this issue can be resolved," wrote Hemachandra.
Despite the lack of information on both sides of the conflict, the picture so far is as follows:

MyEtherWallet and MyCrypto exist in parallel, offering virtually identical services
At least 10 former employees of the MEW, including Taylor Monaghan, now working on MyCrypto. Hemachandra confirmed on Reddit that most of the employees went to MyCrypto, while the latter claim that their project has 20 people.
Twitter account MyCrypto has over 80 thousand followers, who had previously signed up for an account MEW. New account @MyEtherWallet is currently about 7 thousand followers.
Both teams also published traditional assurances that they intend to continue working on innovation, quality and safety of their projects. Since wallet users have access to their private keys, in theory they can use both services, including hardware wallets. The latter, however, needs further confirmation, as well as the decision on which and two services should be considered "present".
"Now you have the choice to use the MEW or MyCrypto. The team I put together will be to build and develop My Crypto and its infrastructure. We will do our best to support those who need help, regardless of what product they use," Taylor Monahan says.
At the same time, counsel for Badri Nataraja, who claims to have nothing to do with either party to the conflict, conducted his own analysis of the situation. Citing court documents, he writes that Hemchandra was with Monaghan in negotiations regarding the purchase of full control over MyEtherWallet LLC for $1 million, insisting that it has the full right to review the financial documents of the company. Monaghan, however, he was denied, and had filed the appropriate lawsuit.

Its consideration will take place on March 27 in the Supreme court of California in Los Angeles.
We will remind, in January the number of sources in social networks spread information that the cyber-criminals hacked into the servers of MyEtherWallet, replacing the DNS. Team MyEtherWallet these allegations, however, denied.
