tooth for a tooth - the animals with the creepiest mouths

in Steem SEA4 years ago

Teeth are extremely important formations on the body of any creature. They play an important evolutionary role, necessary for animal's existence. Sometimes nature tries so hard that the contents of the mouth of many representatives of fauna are surprising and sometimes even frightening.

The leatherback turtle.
It's hard to imagine that the leatherback turtle, a harmless creature, has such an intimidating mouth. These reptiles can reach several meters in length and are the largest tortoises in existence. Their mouths are riddled with hundreds of sharp teeth. These fearsome appendages extend from the beginning of the mouth all the way to the stomach.
These teeth only look intimidating, because the diet of these animals is exclusively jellyfish. And such a device of teeth is provided by nature in order to prevent the prey from slipping out into the open sea. The species of these turtles is threatened with extinction. There are many animals that were mistakenly thought to be extinct and then accidentally discovered many years later.

Leyard's straptooth.
It appears to be just a whale. However, upon closer inspection, a striking distinguishing feature becomes apparent: long, outward looking, drawn-back fangs.
It's like they lock their mouths shut. Whales can open their mouths by a couple of centimeters. Scientists confess that they still don't understand how this sea creature feeds. And in general, almost nothing is known about this species of toothed whales. They live in deep water and probably eat squid.

Geese
What could be surprising about this bird. And what do the teeth have to do with it? Nevertheless, there are many pictures of geese whose mouths are dotted with many teeth. It is worth noting that these are not really teeth, although they serve to grind food. Moreover, the bird's tongue is also dotted with keratinized growths. These appendages are hard cartilage and grow directly from the beak and tongue. Despite this, the composition of "teeth" is different from the usual, a goose bite can be extremely painful. That's why you can't joke with these birds.

And scientists are also sure that the ancestors of geese had the most real teeth, which atrophied during evolution.

Crab Seal
This cute creature has a mouth full of teeth that look like hacksaws. Or like teeth from which other teeth grow.
Based on the name, we can say with complete certainty that the animals eat crabs, and the specific teeth are needed to split the dense chitinous shell. But that's not the case. These seals feed on krill. This food is small, and the similar structure of the teeth works like a sieve - it sifts out objects that are too large.
