In the Old City - Montevideo: Friends Of Steemit from Uruguay that can tell me more about this great place I visited a while ago.
Ciudad Vieja is the old town of Montevideo. That until 1829 was surrounded by a wall that protected the city from possible invasions, one of the most emblematic parts still remains the Puerta de la Ciudadela, which still stands today.
In the Old City there are numerous constructions of the colonial era or of the first decades of independence of great architectural value. At present, it is also a neighborhood. It houses numerous companies, ministries and state offices, banks, museums, art galleries and cultural centers, as well as restaurants, clubs, and bars.
The Gate of the Citadel:
The Citadel was a formidable fortification of stone conformed by a great square of arms surrounded by walls with walls of granite of 6 meters of thickness, 4 fortresses equipped with 50 guns. It was a small fortress, a defense building of colonial Montevideo, where the Puerta de la Ciudadela was the entrance to that fortress, the communication with the city.
Underground, some of the tunnels that connected the Citadel with the nearby fortifications that were used as an escape strategy in the event of an attack and to monitor the close presence of Englishmen and Portuguese remain sealed.
In 1877, it was completely demolished to later become the base of the current Plaza Independencia, where in the West, we can appreciate the Puerta de la Ciudadela.
