Guild to dim sum part 1
Dim sum directly translate to drink tea. It's believe that while eating dim sum we have to enjoy tea together to wash down the fatty oil in our mouth. This cleans the palate. Another reason is so that it helps us to feel less full after these meal mainly for its emulsion property. Today I would share to you what we can find in a dim sum restaurant.
Dim sum is divided into 3 category. Steamed, fried/ baked, porridge/ rice/ noodles. This is not tradition, it's more on Malaysian style dim sum. Today I'll only discuss about steam item.
Glutinous rice
It's steamed in a lotus leaf. Rice itself is season with soy sauce and filled with chicken/ pork, mushroom.
Yam cake
It's a combination of yam, flour and it's steamed till it sets. Topped with fried onion, garlic, dried prawn and fresh spring onion.
Siew Mai
This is more common. It's a flour dough filled with pork and prawn
Steamed pork ribs
Season with fermented black bean, finish with coating of corn starch. It not like bbq ribs it's has more of a chewy bite so don't be upset when I actually tried it.
Steamed Phoenix craw
It's chicken feed fried and then steamed
Steamed bean curd wrap
Filled with tofu, prawn and other vege
Crystal dumpling
Skin made form glutinous rice starch, can be filled with anything but usually prawn
Cabbage dumpling
Wanna cut back on carbs? Try this instead. Filling are about the same as other .... Pork and prawn
Chee cheong fun
Directly translate to pork intestine. Although it isn't pork intestine but it's name comes from its look. Usually filled with prawn and served with soy
Xiao long pau
Small dragon bun.... Made with meat, gelatine and stock of the preferred meat. Can be serve with black ginger and ginger
Steam dessert time!!
Custard layer cake
Vanilla custard in between each layer
Ma lai gau
Translate to Malay cake so I guess it's only unique to Malaysia. It's a extremely fragrant steam cake!
One more but it's for next time due to its large variety..... Steamed bun or bao
Arrgh! Now I'm hungry for steamed dim sum and I have nowhere near to get any!

No dim sum in Washington??
In the city, yes, but alas! We moved from Seattle and now we're kind of in the boonies about 2 hours from Seattle. I said my location was Seattle because it is the closest major city and is a place people recognize. Goldbar... not so much.
