Breaking down a jeans / 大人の自由研究？ジーンズ分解してみました

I wanted to break down a jeans for a while. As I usually remodel old jeans to a skirt or a short pant, I didn't have a chance until now. But now I have enough short pants and skirts and it's tooooooo hot to wear a jeans so it's time to break my favorite one, which was quite worn out.

ジーンズの分解はずっとやってみたかったことのひとつなのですが、貧乏性で膝に穴が開くとスカートやショートパンツに作り変えてしまいなかなかできませんでした。今は十分スカートもパンツもあり、さすがに暑くてこの先数週間は履かないだろうとばらしてみました。

It was a lot of work to remove stitches. I can understand jeans were made for workers in the Gold rush time ... In addition to regular stitches, there were chain stitches and overlock stitches with tough threads. Thanks to a ripper, one of my favorite sewing tools, I could make it :)

ゴールドラッシュの労働者の服として生まれただけあって丈夫な作りです。普通の縫い目と合わせてチェーンステッチがかかっていて端はロックで処理してあるので糸を外すのも一苦労。この名前は知らないけれど愛用の道具が大活躍。今調べてみたらリッパーというようです。ありがとう、リッパー、君無しには分解不可能でした。

Simply a lot of thread ... it's only part of the threads.

糸の量すごい・・・。これでも一部です。

What is nice about breaking down things is that I can see the intentions behind the design and how they work. The connection part of left and right legs is done as French seam. It makes the jeans tougher and doesn't annoy one's inner thigh with overlock rough stitches. Great!

分解の楽しいところは仕組みやデザインの意図を垣間見ることができるところです。左右の足を合わせるところは袋縫いになっていて、頑丈にしつつ、布の端が出ないので履き心地がよいことも考えられているのかな。

The following picture is the part that comes under the zipper. By making it from a rectangle fabric like origami, I think the designer could reduce process of cutting, overlock and sewing parts together.

これはチャックの下にくる部品なのですが、四角い布を折り紙のように折る作りにすることで裁断、切り端の処理、縫い合わせの手間をはぶいていると考えられます。安いジーンズでボタンフライのものがちらほらありますが、チャックよりもボタンをつける方が手間がかからないからでしょう。

A jeans consists of so many parts. Certainly a lot of process to assemble them together. Even though some jeans are sold 10-20 dollars at fast fashion stores. Of course producers take effort to produce clothes effectively such as cut fabric at the same time with a sew, divide tasks etc. But I couldn't help thinking about the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh :( I wish all the people in fashion industry have a proper work condition and environment.

それにしてもこの部品数、生産工程数で、世の中には1000円代のジーンズもあるなんて。作る人の人権がないがしろにされていたり、搾取されていたりしないことを願うばかりです。5年前のバングラデシュのラナ・プラザ倒壊を思い出さずにいられませんでした。もちろんまとめて裁断したり、分業したりといった工夫はしているでしょうが。

Coming back to breaking down a jeans, the reason I did it was to make a master pattern for pants I make in the future. The skinny jeans had a perfect fit and so I thought it can be a good master pattern.

それで、なんでジーンズを分解してみたかったかというと、ジーンズの作りを知りたかったのと合わせて、ぴったりのパンツの原型を作りたかったからです。パンツはこれまで何度か原型を作ってみるもののなかなかしっくりこず。このジーンズはスキニーで文句なしにぴったりだったのでよい原型になるかなと思って。

I bought it at Macy's in NY when I visited there for a business trip three years ago. I wore it quite often and couldn't say buy for a while easily while I was pregnant. I wore it with a rubber band to extend the waist ;) I wore it heavily after my daughter was born during the first busy days. In the end it got a hole in the right knee (as always).

仕事でニューヨークに行った時にメイシーズのセールで見つけて買った思い出のジーンズです。産前はお腹が大きくなるもののお別れが名残惜しく、ボタンにゴムをひっかけてずるずるはき続け、産後は体を動かす生活でもりもり履いていたらいつも通り右膝に穴があいてしまいました。

I wish the master pattern I will make works well and the jeans become a mama of pants I sew in the future through my life. I will write how it turned when I make a pant ... after this hoooooooot days.

このジーンズから作った型紙が今後縫うパンツたちのよきお母さんになるといいな。これから原型を作って、秋にパンツを縫ったらまた投稿します。
