Is it true that when we die we go to hell or to heaven?
This question cannot be answered because dead persons never come us to tell about their after-death experiences and it is not possible for a living person to experience whatever happens after death without dying first. So, it is impossible to tell what happens after death. Those who have gained this experience, never come back to tell about it and those who are living cannot experience what happens to the dead persons.
Every living creature fears of death but it is inevitable. However, people could not digest that death is the end of life. So, they tried to find the answers related to what happens after death. Ancient philosophers and religious leaders propounded that soul is different from body. When a person of animal dies, soul releases from body and goes to some other places. Later it was thought that the soul goes to hell or heaven according to one's deeds when one was alive.
Atheists believe that there is nothing like soul. According to them, we have given only one life. When we die, everything ends for us with our death.
Theists believe that only body dies and soul remains unscratched as it is immortal and eternal. Religions have different views on the state of soul after the death.
Almost every religion says that the soul or spirit of the person goes to the heaven if one has done good deeds in one's life, but one has to remain in hell if the deeds of the person was bad and sinful.
'Bhagwat Gita' the holy book of Hindus tells that the soul is indestructible and is above all the pains and pleasure. Then questions arise-how the soul is punished for its sins? We feel pain when we are living. A dead person feels no pain. Soul can do nothing without the body. Body gets destroyed after death. Does God/gods/or other things put the soul in a body and then punish or reward it according to its Karmas?
Abrahamic religions like Islam, Christian, Judaism etc. believe that we have been given just one life. After the death, the soul waits for till the 'judgement day' and then will be sent to the heaven or hell, according to the past deeds. Sinners are sent to hell where they are tortured and tormented while pious souls enjoys in heaven.
Indian origin religions viz. Hinduism, Sikhsism, Buddhism, Jainism etc. believe that we have to take birth again and again till our karmas remains. Between two births the soul has to remain at hell or heaven according to the past deeds.
Some people do believe that some souls become ghosts if they could not go to the other worlds. According to them the evil souls become demons.
So, the religions have different opinions and views about the same subject. Everything is speculation till someone comes back from death and tells about his/her experience. However, people see things according to their religious beliefs and also do things which may took them to heaven after their death. Jihadists and other religious fanatics do not afraid to kill innocents person in the name of religion as they believe they are serving their religion and it will reserve a seat for them in heaven. In the quest of finding imaginary heaven they are making this real world a hell.

This is a misstatement: "This question cannot be answered because dead persons never come us to tell about their after-death experiences". Many eyewitnesses do talk about their near death experiences.
Every such eyewitness talks according to his/her religious beliefs. Is it possible for the creator to make different arrangements for the people of different religious beliefs? Certainly, He/she will not do it.
