Ich bin die Wärme deines Herdes an kalten Winterabenden.
Ich bin der Schatten, der dich vor
der heißen Sommersonne beschirmt.
Meine Früchte und belebenden Getränke
stillen deinen Durst auf deiner Reise.
Ich bin der Balken, der dein Haus hält,
die Tür deiner Heimstatt,
das Bett, in dem du liegst und
das Spant, das dein Boot trägt.
Ich bin der Griff deiner Harke,
das Holz deiner Wiege und
die Hülle deines Sarges.

A Blessing for the Woods

Before I leave, almost without noticing,
before I cross the road and head toward
what I have intentionally postpone

Let me stop to say a blessing for these woods:
for crows barking and squirrels scampering,
for trees and fungus and multi-colored leaves,

for the way sunlight laces with shadows
through each branch and leaf of tree,
for these paths that take me in,
for these paths that lead me out.
