Thinking about Investing in Steem Monsters - Finally Getting Some Packs (and a Few Airdrops)
Beta edition booster packs of the Steem Monsters/Splinterlands card game sold out, and a new edition called "Untamed" is starting. There will be 1,5 million Untamed packs produced, and for 14 times, once 100,000 packs are sold, some cards will be airdropped to players who have bought packs. This means there will be 14 airdrops, and people who bought in before the first 100,000 were sold will be eligible for all 14 airdrops, those who bought the packs that were among the second 100,000 will be eligible for 13 airdrops, and so on... with one exception: whoever gets packs through either the Kickstarter or Fundition crowdfund campaigns will be eligible for all 14 airdrops! The first 100,000 packs on pre-sale are already gone, so whoever decides to buy packs outside the crowdfund from now on will already be missing out on the first airdrop.
I didn't pledge on the first Kickstarter campaign back in 2018 because the battles part of the game hadn't been released yet and I wasn't sure if the game would be my cup of tea, and wasn't willing to spend money on it (not to mention that it was too expensive to convert money from my country's currency - Brazilian Real - to US Dollar).
Even after the battles were released and I found out that I like the game, I still avoided spending money on it. I won the starter pack and bought some cards using SBD from my Steemit post rewards, but I got most of my cards from giveaways. I had never bought a booster pack. The only packs I had opened also came from giveaways, or from the limited time when daily quest rewards were beta booster packs. I had a lot of fun with the game back then.
I haven't been playing the game much lately, because since a few months ago, I've been having some issues with the website that greatly hinder my playing, and this demotivates me to play the game (basically, the cards selection screen is unfriendly to visually impaired people who use the computer with help of screen reader software. More details on the problem here). Even so, I still like the game, and don't intend to give up on it. Actually, I'm starting to think that I should broaden my horizons and also begin exploring the game's investments side rather than just the "having fun" side... now that I've taken my first steps with small investments in STEEM, it might be time to take my first small step in investing in Steem Monsters too. Some things that I could do that come to mind: put cards that I rarely use for rent, try to earn DEC to be able to buy some cards I'd like to level up (to be able to win more battles and get more reward cards, more DEC to buy more cards, and so the cycle goes on), rent the cards I want while I'm still unable to buy them for myself and hope that the DEC earnings will make up for the renting cost, buy a few booster packs and maybe sell some cards down the line too? Though I feel bad at letting go of my cards :P . Since the cards I have are weak, I imagine I'll have small earnings from doing all of this, but if the game pays for itself for the most part and at least earns me enough to buy most of the cards I would like, it would be already nice (less money to spend from my pocket).
And I'm starting to regret not having pledged on the first Kickstarter. If I had, I'd have gotten a few more alpha edition cards (that have been getting rarer and more expensive now). So, I've decided that I'll pledge on the Kickstarter this time (even though the USD conversion rate is very high again).
The Kickstarter campaign page says that those who aren't interested in physical rewards and only want packs can pledge for one of the cheaper tiers and increase the pledge amount be $2 for each desired pack. It's what I did. I chose the "CREEPING OOZE'S PLEDGE FOR VISIBILITY" tier that's $2 USD, and added $10 USD to get 5 packs (the total became $12 USD).

The Kickstarter campaign runs until November 7th, 2019. Those who don't want to miss out on the chance to be in all the airdrops have until then to pledge (it's also worth to note that the credit card will only be charged once the campaign is over).
To those not interested in physical goods and that would rather pay using crypto, there's the Fundition campaign that only offers digital rewards (a starter pack and 20 booster packs), but it only has a $45 USD tier, and there doesn't seem to be a cheaper way to get fewer packs through it.

Hey 👋 don’t forget to use the SPT when talking about Splinterlands so you can be rewarded!
Huh? (*checks the tags again*) Gah! I can't believe I forgot SPT, out of all tags! I had been pretty sure I had used it, but it isn't here... so many tribes, so many tags...
Yes it can be confusing, just use that SPT tag when talking about Splinterlands so you can be rewarded accordingly by the community.
