A lesson in democracy
Although the British minister, Lord Michael Bates, was delayed from attending the House of Lords only five minutes, he decided to resign and refused to back down to the requests of Council members.

During the five minutes that the British minister was absent, the House of Lords debated the question. As soon as he arrived, he asked to speak apologetically about his delay. "I am ashamed because I was not there to answer the question, so I announced my immediate resignation," he said.
Bates left the meeting, despite the shouts of council members who asked him to go back and retract his resignation, but he refused and insisted on leaving.
Bates was born on May 26, 1961, a Conservative politician in the United Kingdom who has served in the House of Lords since 2008, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph.
The British minister was formerly the Langeborg Department of the House of Commons from 1992 to 1997 and served as Undersecretary of the Ministry of State for Criminal Information Affairs at the Ministry of Interior during the period from 2014 to 2015.
He was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of the Interior in May 2015. He resigned in March 2016. He resigned as Minister of State for a 2,000-mile march from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness of the Olympic Truce.
Bates returned to the government as secretary of state at the Department for International Development in October 2016.
