Let's Dim The Lights, Shall We?
Hey guys, I was going through some of my stuff today and guess what I found? If you guessed something related to art - you know me too well :P
Anyway, I found 2 big rolls of cold pressed watercolor papers which was a SWEET treat to me :D Without any delay I immediately started sizing, marking and cutting the paper and taped it to get down to business. Now, I am a huge fan of street photography shot during night hours. With the colorful streets and so much life. And naturally, painting one has always been a wish. It looks easy (but isn’t) and I have tried a very simple painting in the past but it was no challenge tbh.
I found 2-3 pictures which looked challenging enough to be used. Now after these few years of being in design and art, I have developed this particular hack for myself. Whenever there is too much stuff going on in a picture, I like to dissect it into layers for a little clarity. It REALLY helps me to understand the values, tones, highlights, shadows and a general idea of the color palette.
And it's really simple too! You can use the Cutout/ Dry Brush filter in Photoshop and adjust the layers according to your understanding. Another example is if you need to study the outlines while avoiding distraction from the colors you can select options from the "Sketch" filter according to your need!
Below is a filtered picture of the original one (check end of the post) which was my reference for the day. It took me about 4 -5 hours to reach it's end but I did learn a lot and am pretty happy with it. There are still about a hundred errors but I am glad for the start. Okay, less talking and more pictures now (With some peelporn at the end :P) Let me know what you guys think!
Keep Creating
Lots Of Love <3
It is really beautiful ❤️
Thank you <3
Oh, I love the technique you've used! Simplifying the picture so to get less distracted is super smart. I would love to try it someday :-) (I'm not really a painter though, but I did do some years ago.)
Thank you so much <3
I am glad that it was of use to you @soyrosa
Wow amazing work! I love pieces like this that create a whole feeling. A busy rainy New York evening after work. Cheers!
Thank you so much! :)
Amazing. I don't paint in watercolors, takes a great skill to do watercolors. I paint in oils, and from experience, even in oils, night scenes are hard to pull off. Easy to get to dark. Beautiful Job.
It was a good learning piece for me indeed! I had always wanted to try it out :) Have never gotten any experience in oils though.
Very cool ! I love how you walked us through the process and how you showed that you brought your own interpretation and creativity off the original reference :)
Happy that you liked it :) Thank you and Cheers!
