Kintsugi - The Art Of Imperfect Beauty

in #life5 years ago (edited)

Kin meaning gold & tsugi meaning join is a 15th century Japanese art of fixing broken pottery pieces using lacquer and gold/silver. The story behind it's origin is that the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa broke one of his favorite tea bowls and sent it to China for repair. He was horrified when the bowl was delivered back only to see it repaired using metal staples. He asked his craftsmen to fix it in a more appealing manner. They used the process of lacquer and gold which marks the beginning of this art form.

Methods

The 3 ways of performing kintsugi are the piece method, joint method and the crack technique. In the piece technique instead of using all of the broken pieces, some of the pieces can be changed all together to make it look attractive and aesthetically pleasing. In the joint method, some of the pieces are filled with gold completely. And obviously the traditional crack method where the broken pieces are joint back together using some resin and gold dust providing the golden lava effect.

Concept/Philosophy

Some people closely relate kintsugi with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. The entire teachings of wabi-sabi emphasises on accepting imperfection and finding beauty in it. On a larger context, it applies to each of us too. We must embrace our scars and wear it proudly instead of sweeping them under the carpet. Once we recognise our flaws and respect the same in people around us, it allows us to accept change and have a solid foundation.
