Artist Of The Year
The first episode of Portrait Artist Of The Year 2019 was released a few hours ago and it was only a month ago that I started watching the series. I came across this video on Youtube with the thumbnail of Indira Varma (ellaria sand) from Game of Thrones. And it took me only about a minute to get hooked to those episodes because of the level of excitement it created.
So, What Is Artist Of The Year?
It is a television series where amateur and professional artists compete with each other through many rounds to get to the semi finals and then to the final round which is filmed at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The 2 genres are portrait and landscape which takes places almost every alternate year. The entries with the best self portraits are selected for every round. Each round consists of 12 artist and 3 celebrity sitters. The winner receives a £10,000 commission to paint a famous personality and their artwork becomes part of a national gallery.
The artworks are judged by Kate Bryan, Tai-Shan Schierenberg and Kathleen Soriano. I have watched the 2017 and 2018 series won by Gareth Reid and Samira Addo respectively who were given a commission of painting Graham Norton and Kim Cattrall. Following are the list of all the TV series which have been broadcasted by now.

I think this is fantastic way of motivating artist to step out of their comfort zones and a big milestone in their careers. I mean I can only imagine to do a live portrait in 4 hours of time with people and the judges watching over all the time. The entries for the 2020 challenge on their official website has been closed but if you guys are interested then it is worth waiting and applying for 2021 :)
