The culture of Sindh is very wide but today we will analyze one of its components, Ajrak, which is very important. It is the ancient cultural cloak of Sindh. People in Sindh wear it with great pleasure and it is also used in some parts of Punjab, but the demand for such items is very high in foreign countries and it is now manufactured in factories and very few factories which make it by its original treditional way by hand.It comes in different colors with blue and red being the most important.
MANIFECTURING OF AJRAK
Manifecturing of Ajrak consists of 21 steps.we will discuss some of important steps
In the first step, the cloth is torn and then soaked with river water and laid on a copper bed and covered, then heated for a day and a night to steam. This process opens the holes in the fabric and this stage is called khubh
The second stage is called saj, in which the cloth is placed in a dung and oil that is extracted from the seeds. This process is very important for the sheet and makes it soft from here
It is then subjected to the teak process for ten to fifteen days, after which it is washed with oil, after which it is trained and sent to the factory.
In the factory, various block-shaped stamps made of wood were stamped on the sheets. These stamps are of different colors.
After that these sheets are protected from heat and sun so that their color matures. After drying, it is taken to the river and washed with river water. Wash until all colors are clear. After that it is taught and ironed and sent to the market for sale.
THE SITUATION OF AJRAK INDUSTRY
Ajrak is held in high esteem in Sindh and is in high demand. But unfortunately, due to the low wages of the artisans, the hand-made ajrak factories have become very less and have been replaced by modern factories. And different and imitation designs are made on these modern factories. There are very few factories in Sindh where Ajrak is made by hand.
