All of us celebrate festivals. It is an occasion to celebrate and enjoy. On festival days, people wear new clothes, eat special food and visit their families and friends. In earlier chapter, we have discussed how we can have fun with our families during festivals. Different festivals are celebrate¬d at different times of the year. Three kinds of festivals are celebrated in India- -religious festivals, national festivals and harvest festivals.
RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS
DIWALE
This festivals is also called the festivals of light, known as Diwali and is celebrated by Hindus. On this day people pray to goddess Lakshmi. They decorate their houses with diyas and lamp. They wear new clothes and burst crackers. Also, on this day, they exchange sweets and gifts with friends and relatives.
CHRISTMAS
Christmas is celebrated on 25th December every year.It is the day when jesus Christ was born. It is a religious festival of the Christians.
On 24th December, people celebrate Christmas Eve. Christians go to the church to offer their prayers. They decorate their houses. They place a Christmas tree and decorate it. Children wait for Santa Claus to visit their homes on christmas eve to give presents.
EId
It is a festival celebrated by the Muslims. On this day, people go to the Eid Gah to pray. They meet and wish each other Eid Mubarak. This festival is celebrated at the end of ramadan, which is the holy month of fasting. Muslims keep fast for 30 days. On Eid, people wear new clothe and meet their family and friends. They make a special dish Sewian on this day.
GURUPARV
It is a religious festival of the Sikhs. On this day, they celebrate the birthdays of their Guru. Sikhs decorate their houses with bright lights. They go to gurudwaras to pray and offer their sevices. On this day, they wear new cothes and meet their family and friends.
NATIONAL FESTIVALS
People of our country celebrate national festiv. On national festivals, people hoist the national flag and sing the national anthem. There is national holiday on these festivals. Independence day, republic Day and Gandhi Jayanit are known as our National Festivals.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Every year on 15th August, Independence Day is celebrated by us. It is on 15th August 1947, India got freedom from the British ruls. On this day, the Prime Minister hosits then national flag at Red Fort in Delhi.
REPUBLIC DAY
Every year, Republic Day is celebrated on 26th january. It is on this day in the year 1950 when India became a republic Country. In a republic democratic country, people have the right to vote and elec their own leaders. on this day, the president of India takes the salute at a grand parade in New Delhi and also hoists the national flag Manypeople participate in the parade.
GANDHI HAYANTI
Every year, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 2nd October to celebrate the birthday of Gandhiji. Mahatma gandhi is also called as the Father of the Nation. Our leaders on this day offer garlands at his samadhi at Raj ght in New Dheli.
HARVEST FESTIVALS
The time when crops get ripe is called harvest. After the harverst, people sell their crops and get money. So people celebrate festibals during theis period. They are called as harvest festivals during this period. They are called as harvest festivals. In India many harvest festivals are celebrated.
PONGAL
It is a festival which fals in the month of hanuary and is celebrated in Tamil Nadu. People make pongal rice and do puja to sun god.
ONAM
King Mahabali is worshipped on this day. Thes festival is celebrated in Kerala. People decorate elephants and take out processions, and boat races are held on this day.
BIHU
People of Assam celebrate Bihu at three defferent thimes of the year sprong, authumn and winter.
LOHRI
This festival is celebrated maninly in North India, especailly in Punjab in the month of January. People light a bonfir and celebrate with corn and sugarcane thus, we come across many festivals, that are happy occasions and bring joy to us in many ways.
