Why Is Moral Important

in #steemiteducation8 years ago

Morals are a set of rules that contain the good, the bad, the right, the wrong, and what we should and shouldn’t do in our daily lives.

When a person violates the rules of society, that person will be considered as immoral. Moral education should be taught equally with academics as one should not only be measured with their academic achievement alone. Teachers must also assess the students in the aspect of morality. Most children who have better academic achievements tend to have good morals while those that are the opposite, tend to have poor sense of morality. This is plainly because those who have good morals tend to have better study habits, are able to follow instructions and are respectful to everyone, especially the elderly. Those who have a poorer sense of morality are pretty much lazy in the sense of doing what is asked of them, or generally disrespectful.

Today, there are many crimes involving students such as student brawls. This can happen from the smallest and most trivial things and can escalate to even the use of sharp weapons. Why do these problems occur? The answer is none other than the student’s issues with morality. Often times, they are not ashamed to call themselves thugs and are the first ones to initiate the brawl. This goes without saying the problems with promiscuity where students are no longer ashamed to hold hands with the opposite sex in the sight of public eyes. The main cause of these things clearly is the lack of ethics and morals.

Moral problems experienced by the students today are generally caused by their extensive liberties. This means that the first factor is the parents. The lack of parental control over the children’s activities is almost always the main reason. Parents nowadays, are too busy working and has lesser time paying attention to the development of their children’s education. The next factor is the influence of technological progress. The role of gadgets, combined with the lack of interaction between the parent and child, will further exacerbate the child’s morale. Children will be made too busy tinkering with their gadgets and care less of what is going on around them, particularly school and its lessons.

It is imperative for parents to become best examples for their children. The behaviour of a child is reflective on the attitude of parents. As the saying goes “The fruit does not fall far from the tree”. While that is true, we should not take the child’s environment for granted, as this can have drastic impact on the child’s moral compass. In a school setting, it is the teachers that act as the second parent, and much like how a parent is expected to act at home, the same goes for the teachers in school – become a good example for students. In a school environment, we, as teachers, should be able to let the students follow rules and regulations. We have to let the students understand that, violating such rules will give them demerits or maybe receive sanctions or penalties. As effective as this is in school, this can also work at home, as this would help our child build their obedience, and respect the rules. Something that paves the way for good morals.

While the imposition of a consequence will really help out, it is also great to reward a good displayed behaviour. As teachers, we should be able to gratify students with good behaviour by constantly providing positive feedbacks. This allows good moral attitude to be embedded in the students, letting them recall how great it always is to do good.
Education in is required to activate a student’s potential in life. This can only be done, however, in a comfortable and fun environment. An environment where parents and teachers need to go hand in hand becoming great examples for these students to follow. With that, parents and teachers should try, as much as possible, to be a person with good moral character and lead as an example to the children.
