Continuing the Bid Bot Conversation (last reminder I'm changing my witness voting to proxy minnowsupport)

in #bidbot6 years ago

Hey Steemians. I know there are lots of folks concerned about bid bots and how curation works on the platform. I put together a meeting of bid bot owners and the general public to talk about ways bid bot owners can improve transparency, ways to better serve the community, and some programming changes that we can enact to make the system work better for all involved.

Here's the recording (my audio is a little harsh throughout, sorry about that, it does get a little better at the 1 min mark).

On a side note, my bid bot experiment is going well. Some of the things that I've started to figure out include:

  • make sure you don't bid after 5 days. You can technically do it, but there's a chance on a 6 day old post if you're not paying attention you may end up missing your bid window which exposes you to non-refunds and may hurt the bid bot owners.

  • Using bid bots can net you a profit, but it does absorb liquid funds and put your earnings into steem power. So, if you're hoping to keep your liquid funds this path will actually drain them.

  • Posts with higher post rewards tend to get more views. So, it would appear that posts that have purchased a large vote end up getting more views on the platform.

  • Spreading curation rewards after a post feels good.

  • Using the bid bots at the front of a post feels good too because it's driving up attention to the post at the start of it.

Random side note. Today is the day I'm switching over my proxy. I've issued many notices on my blog, radio shows, and Discord over the last month. There will be an opportunity in a month to get the vote for those that want it.

Sort:

i heard a lot of ideas. here's what i liked. 1. using steemcleaners to make a check list of who to ban from bot use for plagiarizing and shit posting. 2. placing a cap of $10 on the bots. 3. not rep, but perhaps using average payout as an indicator of who can bid?

seriously yesterday i saw a guy with 3k users, 450 votes and a $100 payout using the bots. he posted a meme. thats all he ever does. obviously people like the meme. but does he really need fluff on that $100 vote? i dont think so.

we need to decide if the votes are to help minnows or used to help people to promo to hit trending. why we cant use a steem dollar classifications is that people who are using the bots for money making can withdraw cash and power down before they hit $5k in their accounts. they can just choose not to become dolphins.

perhaps we can have a separate bot that helps people trend? or a way people who write awesome content can win trending tokens to put on posts that got chosen for curation? this would award quality content.

theres always the people who will vote every bot for $10 each on every mediocre post. im not sure we can stop this, but curtailing the gross abuse would be a step in the right direction.

Cheers for organizing this round table Aggroed. This is exactly what we need. We might not all agree on a solution to the current bid bot problem, but the first step is having an open discussion about it. Well done

There is not a bid bot problem, bid bots are a solution for a problem. The problem to get some traction and to be seen.

Greedy users and spammers are a problem who use the bid bots. ;)

two sides of the same coin. When people are able to abuse the bid bot system, it is a problem

Starting the conversation is a big step.

Organizing the Bidbot owners to talk and discuss certain problems and solutions will come up into serving the community well. They themselves must police each other too so that no one can abuse the system or at least lessen it since the system too can be found with many loopholes where some solutions can be bent for anyone's selfish interest.

I agree. These bots should be DAOs or something similar to prevent theft or abuse.

What is a DAO ?

A decentralized autonomous organization. Basically the bot would follow a set of rules that everyone in the organization decide on without a single person owning it.

super effort,, it is nice post,,, i supported,,@yousafharoonkhan

Hey man as you had said that bidbot is not for getting the profit but for somewhere creating hike for viewers for your post. Thank for make us understand the concept of bitbot.

This content always is high that's why I always follow your post. Thanks again for sharing the more educative post for all of us.

Hey whats up aggroed I stop by the radios some time, more and more people are showing up. Thank you for doing what you do and bringing the community together...

No problem. I love this place!

I am starting to break out of my steemit shell, I will probably see you around more, and also looking for ways to help

Start by growing your network, and a great place to do that is in the PALnet discord.

I drop by there from time to time and most of the time I just don't fit in the conversations to well

Happy to find this... I was testing and did not use bid bots on my last two posts. I make a little more from bid bots and after all is said and done and I do get more attention. It just makes it more fun.

I have been buying more steem even a little at a time adds up. I have decided to use the bid bots again since I don't see them going away.

I want to thank you @aggroed for always being there for us minnows and helping use logically navigate this path instead of coming from an emotional stance. Oh wait, I have listened to 1/2 of the recording. Excellent job, giving me more understanding of the bidbots.

Since day one, and I have said this repeatedly you have helped me. I appreciate you and it is an honor that you would take your time to help on such a level. You have earned my respect and are going to be my top witness. I know I keep saying this but I will get it done on voting for witnesses. You were on my list that I made at one time. Not sure why it disappeared but I will get back on it. Again thank you ❤️
