6 Tips for Working From Home Successfully
Working from home can be a blessing, as it allows you to manage your own schedule and take advantage of convenient working hours. However, if you don’t know how to manage yourself, you could end up getting less done than if you were in an office setting. To make sure you get everything done in an efficient manner, follow these six tips for working from home successfully.
Know What You’re Getting Into
The number-one mistake telecommuters make is jumping into a work-from-home job without knowing what they’re getting into. There are certain physical and emotional challenges you must be prepared to deal with in order to succeed. For instance, research has shown that those who work from home often feel socially isolated, so it’s crucial to identify solutions to combat that problem before diving headfirst into a freelance or work-from-home position.Don't Get Too Comfortable
It can be really tempting to work from your bed, but it may not be that productive. For example, if you’re on your laptop and decide to lay down, you might find yourself getting more comfortable and laying down on your back—which isn’t going to do much good when you’re trying to work! Make sure you find a space in your home that is conducive to working from home. Maybe a cozy couch? A well-lit desk? An office chair?Schedule Time for Work
When you’re working from home, it can be very easy to allow your home life to take over. Make sure you schedule time each day that is only devoted to work. You need some separation in order to get things done. By scheduling a block of time in your calendar every day, you’ll also be reminded not to waste time during non-work hours as well. This will also help when you do have downtime—you won’t feel guilty if you spend an hour watching TV because it was planned. This is especially important if you are trying to lose weight and keep up with other daily tasks.Create a Working Space
Having a designated work area will help you focus and avoid distractions. Research has shown that people who have a home office tend to work more, so try to carve out some space in your house or apartment just for working. It doesn’t need to be fancy—even a corner of your bedroom can do! If you don’t have enough room, consider sharing space with other family members or renting an office outside of your home.
Stay Motivated
Whether you work from home or a traditional office, it’s vital to stay motivated. Otherwise, you may be tempted to slack off on certain days when nothing seems to be getting done. Motivation is key to success—if you can get yourself fired up about your goals and your job, you’ll do much better in both areas. Here are some tips to help you keep yourself energized: Set goals that are challenging but realistic. Use tools like Trello or Asana to create a system of accountability. Reward yourself with small treats after completing big tasks (e.g., if you finish writing an eBook, treat yourself to lunch). Get out of bed!Network with Other Digital Nomads
Living and working from home can get lonely at times. The isolation that comes with a house or apartment can lead to what’s called the cabin fever—it can be difficult to make it out of your office and away from your computer when you work from home. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to connect with other nomads in your area who may be able to share insight on local business resources, which clients you should avoid, and so forth. Meetup is one of my favorite sites for connecting with like-minded people locally; just do a search based on your location and interests. If you don’t find anything, start one! It doesn’t take much time or effort to create an event page on Meetup and link up with others interested in starting their own businesses. You could also check out Facebook groups, Slack channels, and even Reddit boards (like /r/digitalnomad) where you can meet up virtually. I also recommend checking out Nomad List if you want to connect with other digital nomads around the world.
