Rock Dormouse.(Graphiurus platyops)

From the first time I ever saw a picture of a Dormouse, I have always wanted to see a live one.

We were doing the Suikerboschfontein Hike in Mpumalanga Province in South Africa. In the kitchen area of Rooikrans Camp, as the sun went down we started to see these rat like creatures running around.

On closer inspection they were discovered to be wonderful Rock Dormouse - The first that I have ever seen - what a thrill.

Unfortunately this was the only photo I got. As soon as the pre photo flash went off they dashed around.

There are 4 species of Dormouse found in South Africa
