At the top of Mount Hermon, between Israel and Syria, there is a UN buffer Zone known as "Hermon Hotel".

About 30 m from the Cable Car Station at the top is a Monument commemorating the 4 Golani Commando fighters who fell during the 3rd Battle of Mount Hermon on 22 Oct 1973. The last words of the dying commander to the other troops were, "You must not retreat from the Hermon".
Mount Hermon is a strategic military position which Israel seized from Syria during the 6 Day War of 1967.
Then on 6 Oct 1973 Syria launched a surprise attack and retook Mount Hermon at the start of the Yom Kippur War in the First of Three Battles fought up here. Finally on the 22 Oct 1973 it was recaptured by Israel and has been in their power since.
1st Battle. On Yon Kippur, the most Holy Day in the Jewish calendar 6 Oct 1973, Syrian commandos launched a surprise attack and captured the IDF outpost on Mount Hermon.
Casualties and Losses -
Israel 16 killed 12 wounded. ( This includes captured solders who were later executed).
Syria 15 Killed 3 wounded.
2nd Battle 8 Oct 1973. Syrians repelled an Israeli counter attack
Casualties and Losses -
Israel 23 killed 55 wounded.
Syria 29 Killed 11 wounded.
3rd Battle 22 Oct 1973 Recaptured by the Israelis
Casualties and Losses -
Israel 56 killed 83 wounded.
Syria Many casualties.
