Let's know the legend of La Sayona

Hello, dear readers.

Today we will continue with the series of women ghosts. In this opportunity I want to continue with another of the best known stories in Venezuela and is the legend of La Sayona. This woman is confused with La Llorona, a story we reviewed earlier. The similarity lies, perhaps, in that the two are ghosts of women usually appear at night, wandering the streets, with a long dress. But the big difference is behind the story of each of these ghosts and the reason they wander. When it comes to La Llorona, the woman appears screaming looking for her children, while La Sayona looks for unfaithful men.

Legend has it that there was a very jealous woman named Casilda who believed that her husband was having an affair with his mother. There were so many jealousies that once, blinded by anger and despair, she killed her husband and her own mother. It is said that the dying mother cursed her daughter and condemned her to wander in life and death bearing the guilt of murder and jealousy. Supposedly, for the Venezuelan, there is nothing like a mother's curse.

In this sense, it is interesting to note that in Venezuela people believe in curses. Curses are a type of spell or prophecy that one person wants for another. It is believed that these evil and unhealthy desires, if invoked by a member of your family, are fulfilled. Ideally, if you think someone has cursed you, say: "The curse of an old magician does not reach heaven, and if he does, he returns, in this way and with these words, the evil that the other person has desired, does not fall on you, but is returned to the other person.

Continuing with the story of La Sayona, it is said that it is a spirit of a beautiful woman who usually appears to unfaithful men. Normally she pursues them or appears to them attracting them with her beauty, and when they approach her, she shows them her sharp tusks, ready to devour them.

In many of the regions, the ghost of this beautiful woman is present in a thousand ways. In some areas. For example, in some places she often appears on highways and roads asking for a "ride". The men who have survived to tell their experience say that when they see this beautiful and provocative woman in the middle of the night, they stop their vehicles for the woman to ride. But being inside and after a while of coquetry, the woman shows her fangs and the men have fatal accidents.

The end of many of these stories ends with allegory or advice to be faithful to their partners, so many people believe that this story was invented so that men did not go out to look for women at night. There are even books where this legend is questioned and it is said that in the colony some women disguised themselves as Sayona to meet their lovers and not be recognized.

In summary, whatever the true origin of this legend, what has remained in the memory of all Venezuelans is that in any night and in any place, there is a beautiful woman, who appears in the middle of nowhere, provoking unfaithful men to then guide them to death.

Excellent as always @nancybriti your work of transmitting our popular culture. I remember listening to these legends told on the radio with dark background music and chilling voices that produced sensations of fear. One or another will have returned home early just by remembering. Thank you for rescuing our legends.

I had forgotten that part of our radio history: at one time this kind of programs were broadcast in Venezuela! I remember the voice of the announcer who told stories of mystery and terror. Thank you for commenting, @evagavilan

A legend that has a lot of chilling, but also a certain mischievousness. This fatal woman, frightened of unfaithful men, seems to seduce by her charms, which would provoke the disloyal conduct of husbands and lovers; so that a simulation of infidelity would produce the other.
I suppose that Sayona's name will come from sayal, the tunic worn by the sayon, the medieval executioner. Thank you for your illustrative post, @nancybriti.

That's right, @josemalavem. That's where his name comes from. It was said, for example, that La Sayona was characterized by the long dress and the loose hair, but in some areas, they say to have seen it with another dress, so in some way or another, changes the real story. Thank you for always commenting.

Interesting post.

the story of a female ghost who will tempt men. His appearance in the middle of the road teased the men by asking for a ride. Usually, men see a woman who is in the middle of the road lonely asking for help, of course, it will be easy to show compassion. In fact, once inside the car and showing its original shape, it certainly makes a shock and will cause an accident.
in this story there is certainly a sound value. how do men have to be loyal to their families and encourage them to always be careful in the course of their lives.
Especially when we know the background of the emergence of this ghost as the curse of the mother. Moreover, we know there is an affair between son-in-law and in-laws. Isn't this the moral principle that we can take wiser.
In a family, of course there must be loyalty, not to cheat. Because infidelity will lead to hatred and hurt will lead to bad deeds.

Although many people have said that it is only a legend, others certify that it is a reality. I believe that behind this story there is an exemplary intention that continues through the years. Thank you for commenting, @rokhani
