Simple Ways To Save Electricity This Summer

in Project HOPE6 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit Community

The price of everything is going up, and electricity is no exception. Some like to call it going ‘green’, I call it saving ‘green’. There are links to some full articles on the best ways to save on electricity you already know about it, but in the spirit of Life Hacker, here is a summary of the tips , I am omitted the obvious ones you probably already know.

CFL’s - you know to turn off the lights, but are your light bulbs are good as CFL’s (Compact fluorescent lamps) .CFLs are much more efficient than any traditional light bulbs that we use in our house. Apart from that it is having more life then any light bulbs.

Unplug it - Many items we leave plugged in use small amounts of energy, even when not in use. It all adds up, so unplug devices used to recharge electronics/batteries when they’re not being used, devices with digital time and date displays that are infrequently used such as alarm clocks, TVs and VCRs in a guest room, and things like calculators that use transformers when they are not in use.

Electric Stoves - If you have an electric cook top, turn the burners off a few minutes before the allotted cooking time. The heating electric stoves will stay hot long for more time as it contain the good conductor of heat in it until you finish the cooking without using extra amount of electricity.

Dishwashers - everyone knows to wait until you have a full load to run it, but remember to switch off the auto-dry option. I open the dishwasher after it’s done and let them air-dry for an hour or overnight and then put them away.

Water-saving note - I just read an article about NOT pre-washing your dishes – dishwashers are made for dirty dishes and it’s unnecessary. Also if you don’t have a dishwasher, buy one (asap). It saves water. A star-rated dishwasher uses about 4 gallons of water to wash a load of dishes and the average kitchen water faucet flows at about 2 gallons per minute. Can you hand wash your dishes in 2 minutes? I didn’t think so. Me either. That’s water, though, on with saving electricity.

Refrigerators - your biggest appliance power-hog, if you have been thinking of buying a new one, do it now its better to find a good sale, first. The new ones use half the energy. Also:

  • keep your refrigerator full
  • keep stuff covered-moisture from uncovered food makes the condenser work harder. If you have a second refrigerator, see if you can get everything into one – remember, a full refrigerator saves electricity.
be nice to your condenser by giving it some space from the back wall and keeping it clean and vacuum regularly
  • Check the seal on your doors-can you pull a dollar bill out if you shut one in the door? Keep the rubber seals from cracking by cleaning regularly and wiping with vegetable oil or Vaseline.
  • Insulate – put strips in your doors, seal off those windows, and insulate the plug outlets, your hot water heater, and what about that attic?
  • Radiators – reflect heat out from your radiator.

Use something like it in the summer in the windows the hot afternoon sun hits the hardest.

Air Conditioners - like your refrigerator, be nice to your compressor, keep the drapes drawn in the heat of the day, and block off rooms not being used.

Fatherson Programmable Thermostats - especially if you are gone all day at work, set it and forget it – and save. Your power company probably has some sort of free ’save electricity’ guide or kit available, take a minute and call or log onto their website. I just ordered ours let you know what you thing about it.

This are simple steps that put you less on bills and on save environment also and you smile.
