A jolt reminisce to childhood memories

We all had our fair share of joyous moments, countless smiles and unfiltered happiness. Just living life free as the bird flying in the sky without any problems in mind other what game to play just to have fun. All this are well kept treasures of our childhood memoir with summer afternoons often spent on playgrounds running around every corner socializing with other kids and when the time comes to take a break, eyes wanders and and all ears waiting for the tinny sound of the Sorbetero’s bell.

Sorbetero is what we call to an ice cream vendor here in the Philippines who sells artisan ice cream (sorbetes) on push carts painted with colorful hues and often carries a tub of 3 – 4 flavors in its cart commonly an ube, choco, cheese, or mango flavored ice cream. And a choice of either a cone, cup, of pandesal (bread) to be paired with your delightful cold serving. Being so popular back in the old days, they’ve been an inspiration to a song “Mamang Sorbetero” by Celeste Legaspi – which is by the way, a big music hit!

And just last Sunday, upon strolling the grounds of Mactan, I saw the “angel” of my youngster years, Mamang Sorbetero with his ice cream cart on standby waiting for the kids to race towards him. And in an instant, flash backs flooded, how I wish I could go back to the old days wherein life is as easy as one, two, three. Sorbetes vendors were a common sight on the streets when I was a child and we’d eagerly await for one to pass by especially on hot and humid lazy afternoons.

But nowadays, Sorbeteros are so rare to find for they’ve been replaced by bicycle-powered carts with gigantic logos of big ice cream manufactures, also sorbetes today are now called “dirty ice-cream” who coined the term, I have no idea. Perhaps, the term was chosen to put across a subliminal message to the public so that people would rather choose to buy big-brand ice cream. But as for me, I belong to that generation when the entirety of lazy summer afternoons were spent gazing for the Sorbetero to come, and when he does, chances are, I’d stop and buy a cone. Or two.
