Why I love the Libertarian Party

Since releasing my book, FREEDOM! I've gone on three national tours and everywhere I go, I ask people, "How did you wake up?" As you can see from my prior post, How did you first respond to the message of freedom? just the existence of the Libertarian Party was a critical part of my awakening. For most Americans, they first hear the word "Libertarian" because of a Libertarian Party candidate.

The Libertarian Party is the party of principle, which obviously sets it apart from the two old parties. Here is the Statement of Principles (which you can read on the party's platform page)as adopted at the second national convention in 1974:

We, the members of the Libertarian Party, challenge the cult of the omnipotent state and defend the rights of the individual. (I love this line!)

We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose.

Governments throughout history have regularly operated on the opposite principle, that the State has the right to dispose of the lives of individuals and the fruits of their labor. Even within the United States, all political parties other than our own grant to government the right to regulate the lives of individuals and seize the fruits of their labor without their consent.

We, on the contrary, deny the right of any government to do these things, and hold that where governments exist, they must not violate the rights of any individual: namely, (1) the right to life—accordingly we support the prohibition of the initiation of physical force against others; (2) the right to liberty of speech and action—accordingly we oppose all attempts by government to abridge the freedom of speech and press, as well as government censorship in any form; and (3) the right to property—accordingly we oppose all government interference with private property, such as confiscation, nationalization, and eminent domain, and support the prohibition of robbery, trespass, fraud, and misrepresentation.

Since governments, when instituted, must not violate individual rights, we oppose all interference by government in the areas of voluntary and contractual relations among individuals. People should not be forced to sacrifice their lives and property for the benefit of others. They should be left free by government to deal with one another as free traders; and the resultant economic system, the only one compatible with the protection of individual rights, is the free market.

This statement is so ingrained in the party itself that Article 3, Section 1 of the bylaws reads: The Statement of Principles affirms that philosophy upon which the Libertarian Party is founded, by which it shall be sustained, and through which liberty shall prevail. The enduring importance of the Statement of Principles requires that it may be amended only by a vote of 7/8 of all registered delegates at a Regular Convention.

These are principles that unite people because they speak to the core of our universal human nature. To quote FREEDOM!, "We all know life is better with freedom – that our own individual experiences don’t mean nearly as much without the ability to assert our will, rather than having our choices limited by force. ... We all want to live peacefully. We all want fair treatment. We all want to be able to prosper. We all need freedom. We all need love. We all suffer under statism." If presented properly to the American people, these principles will unite left, right, and center against the common enemy that is big, centralized government.

One of the features of the Libertarian Party being a political party is that by it's nature it is inclusive. While this has it's obvious downsides, the upsides far outweigh them. While there are plenty of people in the party who don't understand the Statement of Principles, disgust with the old parties is a great gateway for people to join the party and thus to be exposed to libertarian principles for the first time. That was the case with me. If it wasn't for the Libertarian Party, I would never have become an anti-war activist with Iraq Veterans Against the War, never would have started doing civil disobedience activism, never have started ADAM VS THE MAN, and never would have written FREEDOM!, which has woken up millions to the ideas of freedom.

Of course no true love comes without integrity, and I could not in good conscience make this post without acknowledging the recent failures of the party, specifically failing to nominate a candidate for President in the last three election cycles who represents our Statement of Principles. Some people look at the small scale of the party and think that the corruption involved is only on the scale of millions of dollars. But if you really believe in this message, than you know that if we just got these principles in front of the American people, it would be game over for government one way or another. The truth is, there are trillions of dollars at stake and there are a lot of powerful people who would prefer this message never gets in front of the American people properly.

I have been a lifetime member of the party since I could first afford it when I got back from Iraq in 2004. I was involved in college as President of Libertarians of the Claremont Colleges. For many years, I thought that my best avenues to spreading the message were outside of the party, and that I could let others run for office and play politics and deal with the drama incumbent with it. But witnessing the failures of the party over the last three cycles, I have seen that it's time for "the libertarian takeover of the Libertarian Party" to ensure that our top of the ticket candidates represent our principles. As you probably know, I am running for the party's nomination for President. Whether or not you support my campaign and the platform of dissolving the federal government in a peaceful, orderly, responsible manner, I hope you'll join me in working within the party to ensure that we can use the platform of the presidential election to bring a message of principle to the American people.

There are so many other reasons to love the LP, but I'll just close with one more here. Despite the petty factionalism, much of which I believe is fueled by plants and people who don't share our principles anyway, the party is LOVING! The party is inclusive. The party lifts up and supports all kinds of activists. I have never met a group of activists more welcoming and supportive and encouraging of all freedom-seeking activism than the people who make up the heart and soul of the LP. At almost every LP event I've been to, there is a speaker from outside the party sharing their views and inspiring action. Ingrained in the culture of the LP is the idea that we should attack the state on every front possible and be supportive of everyone doing good work to advance the cause of freedom. Everywhere else you go, there are petty tyrants defending their fiefdoms (and we have few in the LP too!) and pushing others down. In most other activism circles, you would think that everyone wants to be the center of attention and be the sole savior of humanity. Advancing freedom is a team sport. No one plays better with others than the LP and I am proud to seek its nomination and to be a lifetime member. I hope that until all coercive government is abolished, the Libertarian Party can be the hub of the freedom movement. Please join us by going to LP.org.

I am the author of FREEDOM!, a book endorsed (I mean banned) by the US Department of “Justice.” You can get a copy here. I’m running for Not-President in 2020 on the platform of the peaceful, orderly, and responsible dissolution of the United States federal government. You can find out more here. Whoever has the top comment on this post after 24 hours can claim a free signed copy of FREEDOM! by sending me an email at [email protected] with their address.

Skillful means perhaps, but I cant abandon my anarchist principles and support any political parties. I came to anarchism from libertarianism, and I am grateful, but minarchism is still not freedom. Thank you for all your work adam, I mean it. But after this run, please come back to us in the arena of non state solutions to the state. Peace.

I addressed this in my speech today at the Michigan State Convention, and I invite you to come back and check it out when we I get it up here in the next few days.

Seriously? Why wasn't this article spread all over Steemit?
https://michiganlp.org/kokesh-visits-michigan-community-unity-tour/

Where are you going next? Crap. I live about 10 miles from that Golf Club. Oh, well. See you on the next go'round... Why is it, I had NO idea you were going to be there? WTF IS WRONG WITH YOUR CAMPAIGN STAFF? I sure hope you aren't paying them. How much effort does it take to keep Steemers up with your itinerary? HELL... your campaign makes money for every post in here!!!! They should be posting every time Ballou takes a piss on a tree!

Lots of us are "Independents" or "NPAs" who will gladly assist you... IF YOU LET US KNOW WHERE THE F YOU WILL BE ABOUT 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE YOU GET THERE. GEEEEEZE. friggin' jarHeads! unreal. Why are libertarians so dang frustrating? So smart with their MensaMinds, but can't figure out the simplest things. WHY?

Again, can anyone guess why this meme is so accurate?

Putting different people together is always hard, but the common goal to decrease government is admirable, the LP should continue its battle>
Good luck to you, Adam

I think the Libertarians have a lot going for themselves. But they always compromise it seems. Ron and Rand Paul sided too often with Republicans even when it went against their beliefs. How many times has Rand voted to increase the debt. I am not blaming him only saying that we never get to Libertarian principles.

We still only get stuck with 2 party thinking and they are both rotten to the core. Stay strong my friend and let's hope we can have some breakthroughs in US politics. I have been saying for a long time we need several more strong parties to really cause some change.

Someone, please tell me why there is the only two-party system in America? I have heard that are two alternative political parties like Green Party and Libertarian party but why there is candidate does not become president?

Most of problem is media only covers 2 parties and allows 2 parties in televised debates. Then state by state they dont allow the parties on the ballot. I had to write my vote in last election.

I also think that the Lp needs to stand out as something different. The Dems want a centralized big government ran from Dc. The Gop wants a small centralized government ran from Dc. The Lp has this opportunity to stand appart and be the party that is for decentralization of power ran by the local community. The people are welcoming their power back.

The old parties are always doing everything they can to suppress those who represent a challenge to their authority!

As Ron Paul, our '88 Presidential Nominee likes to say, it's really a one party system!

Thank you so much for your response. I am interested in it and gonna study more that how it works. I guess there are always some blocs in a state who want their monopoly.

I also think that the Lp in the past at least few years has had a flawed strategy. They have been putting forth wahed up Republicans with no real Libertarian policies. Instead of joining with the Liberty movement in support of Ron Paul, they attacked him. You could say yhat they were upset because he ran for the Gop instead of the Lp, but this would be the same people who went on to nominate Gary Johnson who also had initially ran for the Gop. This time is different, there is a real Libertarian running. It is time to give the Libertarian Party back to the Libertarians. Kokesh 2020!

and that is because, for the 47 years of existence, it's been a sausageFest and a masturDebator club. Let's hear your plans to overcome this:
who invited the libertarian.JPG

mmasim: Why? Because the Libertarian Party... in its 47 year existence hasn't even figured out how to organize anything to win a friggin' village government, no less a national one. Now, as far as a Libertarian Party candidate actually winning the contest, he has GOT to get on the national debate stage during the race. Adam can garner a spot with 15% of polled adults who are registered to vote. THAT is doable. Systematiclly spreading his "Freedom!" book around to every millenial is the key.

Not to say, being on that stage will help him attain 34% to win in a 3Way race, but the party will attain enough of a data base, and notoriety to begin a quest to become the majority party in select cities and counties. Why do you think everyone remembers Ross Perot from '92? What do you think would have happened to him and his upstart "Reform Party" had he decided to run for Governor of some state in 1994?

Once people see what the 1776 concept of government is, and how it functions in our "complex society", we have a shot at national elections. Aim Small; Miss Small. Make sense?

I can't join the party but I'm cheering for you up here in Canada. I'm hoping that if the libertarians can make it in the US that maybe we have a chance in Canada too.

It'll be a tough sell though. People love our mismanaged social programs. Years of indoctrination telling us how great they are will be difficult to reverse.

We are trained from birth to be competitive. Think of how much better the world would be if we were trained to be cooperative instead.

The Canada LP is great, too! Check out Tim Moen!

I actually did just recently. I have a lot more looking to do to see what he's all about but if he's a true libertarian he can't be all bad. As an added bonus it looks like he's even in my province.

I appreciate the tip. Thanks.

I've been realizing that the government are in cahoots with the banks to steal our wealth, freedom and now time. I was listening to your audio 'Freedom'. Well I'm speechless. But i will say this that what you're on @adamkokesh is synonymous to what the scriptures say.
Galatians 5:1
"it is for freedom that Christ set us free"

and don't forget Acts 5:29 and Proverbs 29:2!

Kofi. Would you be willing to donate 10 min. a day, for 6 days a week to help build "Adam's Army"?... and systematically spread that book and/or audio file around this nation? Good to meet a Libertarian Christian. [email protected] Anyone. Anytime.

Yeah this sounds pretty exiting. Hoq does one get started @fundposhprincess? I actually didn't know that I was a libertarian until it was articulated in this post. Couldn't stop nodding through the concepts..

OH. Then I gather you have not yet read Adam Kokesh's "Freedom!" book yet... or heard the audio file. Please do so.

When you are done, please write an appraisal for us. Any length you want.... Be brutally honest. For better or worse. Email it to [email protected]. Then we'll go to the next step. Praise Jesus.

HI Adam, can I ask, is this a specifically US movement ? I've just read the 2016 Platform in which there are specific references to US constitution.

Secondly, at which point is there any form of altruism ? It's all about the individuals rights but we as a race are a huge community. Do you truly think that within all humans, there is the ability to make choices that involve putting others before yourself ? Has human evolution come this far yet ?
I'm interested in the concept but there are a few things that don't sit well with me, It just all seems so very insular. I think we should be looking beyond man made geo political boundaries.
Thanks in anticipation :-)

Absolutely! That's why I wrote FREEDOM! to be finally applicable and why I identify as a voluntaryist philosophically.

Thanks for the reply. I will seriously get hold of your book and read about your personal ideals. No matter whether we agree or not, I absolutely respect you actually having the bollocks to go out and do something to stand up for your belief system. Enjoy the rest of your weekend :-)

Here's the audio version of the book.

Well thank you so much for going to the trouble :-)

Libertarian principles. 👍

  • Libertarian Party has turned a lot of people off by:
    • constant nitpicking over nuances
      • instead of coming together
on all the things we agree on... like...
      • government just leaving us alone
        and individual responsibility
        and no victimless crimes
        and ... ... ...
    • not accepting Ron and Rand Paul as the most libertarian politicians to make it to congress.
      • Yeah, they play the politician game,
      • but they done more for Freedom & Liberty than any modern day LP politician.
    • Gary Johnson was the best they could come up with? SMH
      • IMHO POTUS Johnson is a bit scary...
    • and Bill Weld?!?!? 👎 really?!?!?

Anyway, I hope you can become the next nominee
👌 so I'll have someone to vote for that shares my common ideals...

  • What a bizarre idea that would be.
    • electing a representative who would actually represent my beliefs!!!

Thanks! I hope you are going to be a delegate to national to help us make the party all that it can be!

I will look into that. I'm friends over on Facebook with one of the state LP leaders, so will ask him what to do...

  • I was a proud Ron Paul delegate.
    • I would consider it an honor to be your delegate.
      • Are you going to try to get the nomination?
You would be the best voice for the LP I've seen for awhile!

@adamkokesh You know I am a huge fan and I really appreciate everything that you have done and continue to do. You are a fantastic communicator of Liberty as well as practical Anarchy! Keep up the good fight and let me know what I can do to assist your efforts.

Right now the most important thing is doing what you can to be a delegate to the LP national convention.

Taxation is theft.

We say it at every gathering!

To the tune of 75% of income.
