AIR-CLINIC WRITING CONTEST: My last fever!
Fever is the state of the body when temperature is high. It's associated a lot with different kinds of infections. When organisms invade the body, our immunity reacts by releasing some substances called cytokines. It's that reaction that leads to fever!
When I was small, my parents would say; there is nothing better than having a good, if not perfect health condition. This regular saying of theirs; I never believed until the day I was down with a terrible fever which happened to be my last.
It all happened when I was 10, during the period of IYAN(pounded yam) FESTIVAL in my mother's village situated far away from my residence. We were supposed to spend a week there but didn't due to what happened.
Three days after our arrival to the village, I got exposed to various harsh conditions I was not used to, like; poor drinking water, mosquito bites and some other things which probably led to changes in my body temperature. I was given some pills of paracetamol, which I actually took and that made me came back to life for some time.
The fourth day was a very terrible one for me as the supposed subdued body temperature got aggravated that night. I was dabbed with a towel soaked in cold water just to make sure I get better for the night. Instead, it became worse and eventually, chills, headache, shivering and sweating all set in.
That night, mum had to inform dad through a phone call and asked him to pick us up very early in the morning so that I can be taken to the hospital for proper care.
No hospital in the village and my mum didn't want the traditional form of treatment.
On getting to the hospital the following morning and meeting the doctor after a long wait, he diagnose me of malaria and directed my parents to the pharmacy for collection of drugs.
After that, we headed straight home. The drugs were used as prescribed and I got back to life within a week.
**This was my LAST FEVER!**
