Be Gritty, Keep Moving

A master copy I am working at the moment.

In my line of work, one might think that I have a lot of motivation to draw everyday. Motivation, in layman's term, is the drive to do what needs to be done. But what happens when motivation is nowhere to be found and you need to finish that one project that is scheduled to be submitted in 30 minutes?

The answer is grit.

One's character trait. A person's backbone.

I came across Angela Lee Duckworth's TED Talk about grit a few years ago (which I'll be linking down), and it made me realize and understand life questions. Why did I fail at school? Why did I go through on hiatus in my life as an artist? Did I lack the motivation? Did I not persevere? Was my passion not enough? And although my mental health has something to do with it; I failed because I was not gritty enough.

Now let me share to you the 5 things I consciously practice everyday in order to keep moving forward despite the lack of motivation.

1. THE 5 SECOND RULE

To make it short and sweet: If you want to do something, do it immediately. Ideally under 5 seconds or your brail will kill your will to do it.

Read: The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins

2. REASSESS YOUR PURPOSE AND LONG-TERM GOALS

Nothing is more meaningful than re-assessing your purpose as to why you even started. And although we do have short-term goals, which is just as inspirational and rewarding, nothing can defeat the joy and excitement of realizing your biggest dream. (Mine would be attending and graduating in an Atelier.)

3. REPEAT YOUR MANTRAS IN LIFE

When achieving something, we often find ourselves sidetracked because of various reasons. And it can make us or break us. One of the things I love is reminding myself of my principles and virtues in life in order to achieve something without hurting or stepping on anyone along the way. This will also help you in maintaining your inner peace which is crucial in everyday decision making.

Here are my personal favorites:

  • If the grass looks greener on the other side… Stop staring. Stop comparing. Stop complaining and start watering the grass you’re standing on.
  • The true measure of your success is how many times you can bounce back from failure.
  • Don’t sit around. Start moving! In the beginning you may not go in the direction you dream, but as long as you’re moving, you’re creating possibilities.

4. YOU CAN REST, BUT ALWAYS TRY AGAIN

This is another personal favorite and has always worked for me. After applying the 5 second rule, I work. And even though I am already working, I still can find excuses to stop, i.e. it's not working. What I do is that I give myself a minimum of 15 minutes to work on a drawing. most of the time I find myself engaged in the last few minutes, and that gives me that undeniable drive to continue working. But if that fails as well, then rest. Drop everything and do something else. But remember to try again as soon as possible.

5. "FAILURE IS AN OPTION, BUT GIVING UP IS NOT"

That is self-explanatory, right? But just let me share to you a very powerful story and message from Pakistan's Iron Lady Muniba Mazari.

I hope you learned something from this article. If you are like me, an artist who struggles to keep going, kindly give me your personal tips in order to stay in the marathon.

Thank you & Namaste!

Love the article. When I was starting out in my career I usually answered that I have passion. I am passionate about the things I do and care about.
Yet you grow older, life throws you lemons and rocks! It is not even straight tosses but curveballs that you don't even expect. So you learn to roll with the punches and get your hits.

Then disappointment happens and your will ftizzles out. You stand catatonic. Then you try again.

Grit was something I learned to need to survive the corporate rat race. Grit to get up after each rejection. Grit to persevere after being treated unfairly. Grit to withstand criticism.

Passion is great but grit is also important. Thanks for your insights. May I recommend Jonathan Habits from Grit to Great book.

First, let me say I wish I write like you. Your words are beautiful and so is your delivery. Thanks, @maverickinvictus! Will check out that book. :)

I am blushing right now haha I feel like a high-school kid.

Your an excellent writer yourself and I love how you compose your thoughts.

It's good to be young at heart, haha. ;) Thank youuuu! Although I feel like it's all over the place.

I really like your philosophy as you summarized it above. I also struggle with self-motivation. For instance, if I do not start my day right, the entire day goes topsy-turvy, and at the end of the day I just feel dejected because I have not managed to achieve whatever I wanted on that particular day.

For instance: my "real" job requires me to travel. As it is a freelance job, it also means that I am home quite a lot. On my days at home, I feel that I have not achieved anything if I haven't at least done something artsy, whether it is crochet or papier maché. I also aim to post on steemit every day that I am at home, but that I have not managed to do yet.

I am now going to try to follow your ideas for productivity in my life.

Upvoted.

Thank you for considering what I've mentioned above. It sucks when you feel like youre not being productive. As for being at home, I personally do not mind because I am an introvert (I believe around 95% if I were to assess myself), although I wish to do more artsy stuff than sleep 16 hours a days. I wish you the best!

As for steemit, have you heard about Streemian? there is a service of scheduling your post. So whether youre online or not, you can still constantly post in everyday basis. This is very handy to me because there are days I cannot write, and days I cna write 2-4 quality content. So I go to streemian and schedule my posts. I hope you find it helpful as much as I do!

I appreciate this a lot! Thank you!

I needed to have such drive in life again.

I do not know what I did right this time. The other day, I was all miserable thus the previous article. But today, I feel okay. Maybe because I started drawing again and really liked it as well. :)

I lost my drive to share stories. I do not know. This is not a writer's or artist's block. It is just that I do not have the drive. :(

Come and go lang yan, bebe. Unta hawa nana soon. :) Paint and do those process thing? Or interview another artist?

I might be soon? hehe

Yes, please. :) <3
