Ice Cream vs. Gelato
I often hear the question, "What is the difference between ice cream and gelato"?
Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream but how come they don't taste or feel the same? The main differences are in their composition, texture and temperature.
Composition
Ice cream has more fat content than gelato. Some say the flavor of gelato is more intense because there is little fat interferring with the flavor. Ice cream is heavy on the cream while gelato is more on milk.
Texture (Fluffiness)
Ice cream is less dense than gelato. Air is incorporated into it during the churning process while there's none for the gelato. Ice cream is churned at a high speed and the gelato's is at low speed.
Temperature (Serving)
Ice cream is frozen on colder temperatures which makes the scoops hold together well. Gelato is softer and more elastic.
Which do you prefer? Ice cream or gelato
I don't think I've actually tried gelato, but that first pic of the chocolate made me instantly hungry!

Well, Gelato wins. I can tell you that right away.
As in Italian who used to live in the United States for two years, I could totally feel the difference when it came to eat ice cream or gelato. At first I just thought it was just a matter of translation and who was using the Gelato word was just trying to be more catchy using the Italian word. Then I realized there was a difference. Gelato is soft and creamy, it doesn't make you feel as full as the ice-cream after you eat it because of the fat content you also mentioned. There is no such a good Gelato as in Italy.

Thank you for the additional input! Do you know this brand "Gelatissimo" in Italy? This is the closest I could get to gelato. I do like the gelato better.
There is probably a Gelatissimo somewhere in Italy for sure, I don't think is a chain tho such as GROM for example that has franchising all over the world I believe.
