Intel will get rid of the BIOS permanently in 2020

in #technology7 years ago

The BIOS is slowly but surely approaching its retirement, and on the Intel side it will be effective from 2020. Indeed the marketing director of the company Brian Richardson has advanced this date for the end of the BIOS support on the processors designed by Intel. Starting in 2020, Intel chips will only support UEFI boot modules and will no longer recognize BIOS modules.

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) was the boot module used prior to the appearance of the UEFI standard. This module was integrated into the firmware of the machine and was responsible for running the PC with a minimal operating system.
It was loaded before the standard operating system of the machine and could in particular be used to adjust some parameters related to the boot of the OS or the machine, such as the order of the boot partitions or certain options such as the process rate as well as several diagnostic utilities.
Most computers produced in recent years have now been upgraded to a more advanced version of this boot module, known as UEFI for the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. But these modules can still use a backward compatibility module to support the BIOS features and to be able to work with old equipment that still needs the BIOS.
But Intel plans to end this backward compatibility, to end the BIOS once and for all. Brian Richardson explains that from 2020, the client and datacenter platforms will no longer have this Bios support. Machines running an Intel processor will therefore have a UEFI boot called "class 3".
This denomination denotes a version of UEFI that does not allow the use of BIOS features. This passage in class 3 does not mean that Intel intends to impose the Secure Boot on all its machines, which should allow users to not find themselves blocked by the system.
