The Best Food Post - Week #49 - Narang Kewum

Hi Foodies,

Cheers to this festive season !!! I know all of you are getting ready to celebrate the Christmas and welcome the New Year. In every celebration, sweets are something that we cannot forget. The Christmas tables are for sure decorated with cakes and candies. And today for a change I'm going to share an authentic sweetmeat that we Sri Lankans prepare. This is called "Narang Kewum".

This is the first sweetmeat my mom taught me to prepare. This is prepared with some basic ingredients such as coconut, sugar and flour which also share the symbol of sweetness and prosperity of life. Making this sweet is really easy and I'm sure that everyone of you will try this at home.

Let's see what are the ingredients we want...

Scrapped Coconut Sugar
Luke warm water Salt
Cardamom Clove
Cinnamon Flour
Turmeric Coconut milk
Oil

First let's prepare the filling with sweeted coconut which we call "Pani Pol".

First heat the pan.

Next add 1/2 cup of sugar and let it be caramel.

Then add luke warm water and remaining sugar and salt. Then stir well.

After that add the grinded cardamom, clove and cinnamon. Then mix well.

Once sugar have melted and the sugar syrup starts boiling add the scrapped coconut and mix well.

Now the filling is ready.

Then leave the "Pani Pol" aside until it turns cool.

Now let's make the batter to cover the filling.

First we have to add flour, salt, turmeric to a bowl and mix them all well. Then add coconut milk gently while mixing them well. Make sure that you get a thick batter but not too watery.

After the batter is ready, we can start making small balls with the sweet coconut as I have shown in the picture.

Next heat a pan and add oil in to it. Once the oil is heated, dip those sweet coconut balls in the batter and fry them till it turns to golden brown.

Now "Narang Kewum" are ready !!!!

For me the best part of festive season is preparing these sweets getting together as a family. These practices have been passing through generations in traditional countries like ours and these are the occasions where everyone of the family despite of their age involves in family cooking. This is the place where we make memories filled with joy and laughter sharing each others' stories. I'm sure that you are also enjoying these cherished moments while counting days for the dawn of Christmas and New Year.
