Sony explains why it dropped the headphone jack for the Xperia XZ2

For all of Sony’s audio prowess, it still remains inexplicable to us that it decided to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack for the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. A recent FAQ published by Sony explains that the headphone jack was dropped in order to accommodate the new ‘Ambient Flow’ design, as well as the “major market trend toward wireless headphones”.

This all seems like a bit of an excuse. We’re sure Sony could have made the room to include the jack if it really wanted to. After all, there are other manufacturers that have even slimmer bezels and still include the 3.5mm port.

And, we’re not sure the shift to wireless headphones is as significant as Sony says. Any growth in wireless headphones has been driven more by necessity, rather than customer preference, as some big manufacturers like Apple have dropped the jack.

However, it’s good to see that both Xperia XZ2 handsets will still support Hi-Res Audio. Although what Sony doesn’t publicise too loudly is that Hi-Res Audio will only work with a “compatible wired headset and use of conversion cable”. Not exactly ideal.
