Teaching is Professional Occupation

Professional teachers are the individuals who have completed the advance learning that concentrated on a specific knowledge or background to handle the teaching and educating program. Even so, professional teaching qualification does not make us a professional teacher, in the true sense of the word. We must have been passed through the process of training so to be called as a true professional teacher. In Indonesia, teacher is encouraged to pass a certain training which is followed by a test. The government has set a particular passing grade for those who want to be issued a professional certificate. So, what about teacher who have not yet passed the test? Will they be considered as the professional teacher? It makes me wonder about the true professional teacher. A certificate? What about the teacher who has been devoted their service for number of years are not yet considered as professional?

I personally see, the policy has emerged the tendency to eliminate the capacity of fresh teachers who seriously take part to succeed the main goal of education while their services are not regarded as professional. Why? Because they have not yet been proved with a certificate. So, based on this reason, I am trying to make sense what is professional anyway?

A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns their living from a specified professional activity. The term also describes the standards of education and training that prepare members of the profession with the particular knowledge and skills necessary to perform their specific role within that profession.

We took a teaching program in university, and we were created to be a teacher. We were trained throughout the performance of many series of teaching so that when we come to the end of the program, we are expected to be able to perform our role in educational field. Within this series of training we were then recognized as professional teacher. The thing is, this is not enough to be professional teacher. We will be required to follow the particular policy in the mid of our service. Even so, the government insisted the teacher to pass the training and the test, then we will handed out a certificate after a few months after training (if we pass the test).

In another hand, we are enforced to adapt with new situation that may cause misinterpretation about the meaning of professional. We are dragging from the real meaning of professional. Yes, I am not professional because I am not certificated teacher but I stand out with the origin of professional. This separation of professional acknowledgment among the teacher emerges two side of perspective. First, the non-certified teachers are not totally regarded as the professional, and they have no right to receive additional allowance. Second, teacher who have already handed out the certificate are fully acknowledged as the professional teacher and they must perform their service totally so they will receive the additional allowance. Whatever the matter is. We are professional! Being a professional means we have to be confident and gently act. Performing our job based on the specific knowledge that we obtained from our previous training.

The professional has much to do with management of classroom, especially an early preparation before entering the class such as materials, the lesson plan study and other necessary preparations. It is not that all, the professional is also seen as the standard of behavior of a teacher, each side of our act is role model which might be imitated by our students. Meaning to say, every single step is on their watch! The professional teacher is summed up in orchestrating the class by giving the same right or chance to our students. We must also observe punctuality and appropriate tidiness and dress that reflects the seriousness in teaching as the way to avoid the complaint from our students. We don't want to hear "scruffy" from our student that might lose our confident. In order that the professionalism entitle the teacher to support the education stake holder. The professional teachers must be able to adapt with vulnerable situation that emerges among students and understand to handle the student's problem. So, we can highlight that the professional teacher is not always referred to additional allowance recipients but the professional teacher is who uphold the professionalism values and code of conduct such as guided principles, passion and a purpose bigger than ourselves. If we have these! Then, we are right to be said as professional teacher! Yes! We are professional!
