The Best Camera Man I Ever Had!! Thanks Slab City Steve!

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Steve Grasha isn't just the Camera man behind the videos below, he's a good friend as well. I met him for the first time when I went down to Slab City in February of 2014, but he was quick to come to my rescue later that same year when I was down and out in San Francisco. There are many good people in this world and Steve is most certainly one of them. I can't thank him enough for these very cinematic videos of what was one of the most fun performances of my life.

These recordings are posted on Steve's youtube channel here

along with many other performances from Slab City as Steve is a long time supporter and now resident of "The Slabs" and they continue to host a weekly open mic on the now world famous stage of "The Range".

Slab City has always been a popular destination for Travelers the world over, but gained massive notoriety after being featured in "Into The Wild" a 1996 book written by Jon Krakauer and then a 2007 film directed by Sean Penn about the life of Christopher Mccandless a real searcher who died in 1992 while in the wild forests of Alaska trying to come to terms with a childhood in a generally abusive home. His Sister Carine has since written a sequel of sorts. "The Wild Truth" was published in November of 2014 and goes much more in depth as far as Chris as a person, his parents and their tumultuous home life.

It's also one of the SoCal locations mimicked in Grand Theft Auto V known in game as "Stab City"

Slab city is a Trip and has to be experienced to be understood. I highly recommend it. It's a very interesting clash of social strata out in the sands of southern California by the Salton Sea, not far from Joshua Tree and Palm Springs.

Now this performance starts off a little slow (well technically it starts off too fast) but if you give it till after we run through the chorus once (time marker 1:34 if you prefer to skip ahead) it really picks up. It's an impromptu jam and none of us had played together before this so it takes a minute to find that sync but we definitely get there.

Aaron Michael Daley (Vocals & Guitar), Barry Wayne (Acoustic Bass), Stick Man (Bongo's), Radio Mike (Drums) also some random guy with a beer can attempting backup vocals, I think he's the one who says "Turn It Up" at the beginning which really kicked it off perfectly - Sweet Home Alabama - Slab City, California - "The Range" Open Mic Night

Barry Wayne on Acoustic Bass & Vocals. Aaron Michael Daley on Guitar & Vocals - Original arrangement of the classic "Let It Be" by The Beatles and "Whagonwheel" by OCMS
I have been messing around with different songs that share the same chord progression and often the same key, combining them together. This is one of those compositions and Barry was awesome enough to work on it with me. This is us performing it for the first time at Radio Mikes Friday Night Open Mic (There are a lot of open mic nights in Slab City, like, every night almost lol)
