The threat is still there even after the group suffered a series of defeats in Iraq, Syria and the Philippines. At the Diplomatic Club in Cairo on Saturday (3/3), the head of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov said terrorism remains a threat to peace, and international development. "A number of important resolutions have been adopted by the Security Council over the past two years to improve counter-terrorism responses in member countries," Voronkov said, quoted by Ahram Online. Resolution 2354 in 2017, championed by Egypt and supported by 60 a member of the UN, aims to counter terrorist ideology and narratives. Voronkov said UN Secretary General Antnio Guterres would issue an assessment report on the UN's performance in countering terrorism. He added that member countries will review the report on the implementation of the UN global counter-terrorism strategy in April. This global strategy is reviewed every two years to ensure it fits the needs of member states. Voronkov announced that the UN will also hold a summit of counter-terrorism institutions of member countries on 28-29 June. The aim of the summit is to enhance cooperation, exchange information, and develop new and innovative ways of dealing with terrorism. Voronkov arrived in Cairo on Saturday for a two-day visit to discuss ongoing terrorism threats with officials Egypt. He also met with Egyptian Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar. The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office was formed in June 2017 to provide guidance on the implementation of the UN General Assembly's counter-terrorism mandate. In addition, the agency also aims to improve coordination and coherence, as well as strengthen the delivery of UN counterterrorism capacity building assistance to member countries.
