Why I quit Making Gaming Videos

in #blog9 years ago

When I started my YouTube Channel, I made mostly gaming content. A few disappointing events led me to quit making the videos.

  1. They weren't doing well
When I first start the game series, it would do well, but the deeper I got into the series, the lower the views got. And I only pulled 2-5 views per video. And I shared my videos everywhere I can think of.

  2. low watch time
Watch time is one of the most important things to rank your videos on YouTube. And my watch time was very low. I only pulled 2-5 minutes. I tried everything to keep them on the video. Talking literally the whole entire video, cracking jokes in my commentary, flashing memes on the screen if I died a noob death. NOTHING was working, I could not keep them interested in the video.

  3. Hate
I was getting a ton of hate from the frame rate police. I shared my Life Is Strange game play in a group and right away got hate from the FR police. And one on of my walking dead video, got another dose from the FR police. I didn't know much about gaming on PC at the time because I always played games on my friend's Xbox when he came over to my house. I just could not take it anymore and decided to quit the gaming videos, I wasn't going to quit them for ever. Just until I got a better PC, which IS going to be awhile. I don't have a job at the moment, I have been looking since 2015, and also, there aren't many jobs where I live. Like if a company goes under or the company re locates that can deplete jobs. SO I guessed that it could be 2+ years before I can save up the money for a new PC. I felt that is a long time to wait, so I decided to bring them back, but mostly low spec and old games.

I am having the same problems now before I quit earlier this year. Maybe its hard to keep watch time up on gaming content, maybe that its. or maybe it came from sub for sub people and spammers, those people can greatly affect your watch time, because they don't even watch before dumping their spam on your videos. My latest Undertale game play video 10% of the comments were sub for sub spammers, so that could of been my problem. But its really upsetting to pour your heart out on a video for them to click off after 30 seconds. I mean some people have a short attention span. but I didn't know it was THAT short to lose interest so quickly. And I jump straight into the game. I don't spend 2 minutes of pointless talk, and they lose interest like that? I cannot think of any other options.

Developing a gaming channel can definitely be challenging. I've watched people spend literally years attempting to develop their channel. People may come check out your channel and see what you've got going on, but what keeps people sticking around and more importantly coming back for more is the entertainment value that they get from watching you play. The biggest gaming channels have their own brand that makes them immediately recognizable as a competitive gaming channel or lets-play or whatever, and they do this by being unique from everyone else. Be patient, do what you enjoy, and work hard at building YOUR brand and people will watch.

You are not alone. Check out this post from another youtuber about youtube: https://steemit.com/youtube/@world5list/my-first-day-on-steemit-vs-4-poisonous-years-on-youtube. He describes what he encountered there. Keep a positive attitude and dont get discouraged, keep working hard and you will get there eventually.

I honestly saw no point in pour my heart out in my gaming content only for people to lose interest so fast. The low views and watch time really got me depressed. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I get right into the video, yet they still get bored super quick and click off. I have tried everything but nothing seems to work.
