tl;dr - started new job working in sales for someone else with no clients. This may be an opportunity for me to build direct relationships with business owners and sell myself and potentially win business on the side. Lead from my brother to do marketing on the side.

This blog is for all those who've had been told they can't do it. They're not good enough, too old, young, short, tall, and any other reason people have for putting them down. I've been in those shoes before and I love proving them wrong.

I'm in digital advertising sales. I've recently started a new job working at a local news company. The role is pretty much the same as my old job but in a larger metro city and closer to home. I sell online banner ads to SMB's to help them with marketing. It's a tough gig but i came from a large global agency in NYC so my knowledge is there. Just gotta hustle to make this work. I've realized that this new job has no training, ridiculous goals, and really bad support staff but what can you do? Luckily the job is in my home city which is a large metro city and I have a few contacts there that I have been working in the past that potentially may turn into a new client. It makes more sense now to work with me now that I work for the largest digital news site in their immediate city.

I'm in a sole hunter role and I have no book of business and need to build up my business from scratch. The goals are really high imo. No training at all and my first month's goal is $2.5k that I need to sell in digital banner ads to local small and medium businesses. I knew it was a stretch when I saw the numbers but i try not to lose focus and hope. Just gotta hit the ground running and on the plus side, I was the fastest person on the team to ever close a deal (2nd week I got my first signed contract). I did not hit goal first month, but I have a solid pipeline and maybe I can hit month 2 or 3. I still have a few contacts from my old job that can be hot prospects. It's a bit scary having to build a book of business up from nothing, but I have another colleague who is doing the same thing im doing and he works very hard. Although he isn't doing as well (he had no training and did not come from an advertising background), seeing him grind keeps my spirit up.

The below are the goals I have at the company I work for but ideally, if I find an opportunity while building up these relationships with these business owners, I will try to sell myself to help them do other types of marketing on the side. The positive thing about sales even though i'm working for someone else's company is that im out there selling myself most of the time. I need to convince these people to buy from me AND the company i work for. I always put an emphasis on going above and beyond and hopefully i can turn that into something.

2nd month goal- 5k
3rd month goal - 7.5k
4th month goal - 10k
5th month goal - 12.5k
6th month goal - 15k

On a side note, one of my brothers friends who i tried to sell last year potentially wants to do social media advertising. My brother asked if he can work through me only and not the company I work for. I told him definitely. My company currently doesn't do social media but I can figure it out. I've sold it in the past and understand how it works. How hard can it be?

Will keep you guys posted.
