Crypto is still immature - disabled witness, removed SteemWallet.apps, removed delegations

in #44443 months ago

Today crypto showed what it is. Some friends pulling the strings.

Two Major exchanges: Huobi and Binance decided to use customer funds to power up and start favour voting in the ongoing matter regarding the Steem chain and the last week announced temporarily freezing of Steemit Inc related accounts. Mind you, the amount they powered up will need 13 weeks of powerdown to become liquid again. Imagine if all Steem wanted to be withdrawn from exchanges, they could not even!

As a result now Steem, which used to be a decentralised chain, is run on most probably just one centralised node, which, mind you, can run 20 witnesses from one single computer, dedicating whatever happens with the chain next, without any healthy discussion or countervoting. Basically a dictatorial state, where any decision can just be made instantly.

At least softfork222 was the result a heavy discussion between about 50 key players, community members and long term steem users and investors. This move with Forck22.5 and centralisation of the Steem Chain is a power grab with some phone calls to befriended exchanges.

And that apparantly is the state of Crypto in 2020. Call your friends, owners at exchanges and run the decentralised show. Is that the promise of decentralization?

Because I don't want to offer services for the Steem chain in the current state, i have removed the SteemWallet.app apps for iOs and Android from the Appstores. Coming days I will work on removing any other dapps I made in the past years. I will see how we morph the SteemWhale for coming year. And SteemFest... let's see, maybe we just do a nice great meetup reunion somewhere someplace.

Additionally, I have undelegated all my delegations to many great projects for the Steem chain. I am sorry.

I have disabled my witness and will work on disabling my nodes.

Sort:

I disagree on most points, but I would love a last steemfest (meetup) in amsterdam.

Fork the chain, don't disable the DApps.

Can’t blame you.

One thing undoubtedly missed by the new ‘owners’ is the unselfishness of many accounts, giving time and stake, to try to grow this place over the past four years.

Imagine if all Steem wanted to be withdrawn from exchanges, they could not even!

I have imagined, but what’s the deal? No keys, not yours? Or would they need to honour withdrawals?

look they powered up a shitton of liquid steem. That will need 13 weeks to powerdown. If all steem was wanting to move (people withdrawing) it can't happen.

Thats why now they need a 24h powerdown to "fix" this.

or an instant PD without paying fees or burn a damn. As probably they've already done it.

I'm not happy at the situation but I think you're making an emotional decision and the people you're hurting more aren't Stinc, you're hurting the Steemians who you represent and have been with you for all these years, those who use those dapps and interact with each other. We're all sad about the situation but please rethink your decision and don't make it worst

I just can't believe this is happening....

This really sucks. Now we have a load of pissed off witnesses with Steemit/Justin/Tron holding an axe over Steem. Nobody likes being threatened, but the way they describe the soft fork is misleading. Good luck with finding some middle way. I don't want to see all we have built get washed away.

I am sorry I get this whole issue is fucked. But when did the WHOLE community get to vote on soft fork 22.2? I mean this ninja vote by exchanges is not any better and shit should have been done different on both sides.

I can't fucking believe they did this!

I am sad to hear this. I was hoping for steemfest in Lithuania.

I am so sad to see what Sun has done to Steem.

Our communications are dependent on centralized mechanisms at multiple layers. From ISPs to the physical network, we speak at the pleasure of overlords. The Steem blockchain itself is but a tertiary expression of this vulnerability.

In fact, this notification of our vulnerability to censorship is an extremely valuable warning.

Our ability to know facts enables us to act to secure our lives and property from danger. Today across all enemedia, we are being misled regarding a pandemic that may threaten all our lives, and society itself. Steem is inconsequential in comparison, as I'm sure everyone values their lives and families more than their wallets.

I sincerely and even desperately hope that devs, network engineers, and coders immediately undertake to create a mesh network through which we can reach each other as long as the physical network is powered up, to run blockchains, troll each other, or let us know about outbreaks of plague in our cities.

This is not a drill. This is life or death. We need not to exist at the pleasure of overlords.

Let's live at our sole option.

So what is with the delegation votings we (still) can do? With shutting all your Steem work down, you are doing no-one a favor and playing in the hand of scam exchanges.

I understand your choices, but I am concerned that if all dApps and frontends shutdown steemit will have won as they will be the only way to interact going forward. Now if all dApps and frontends were to agree to a fork and move to the new fork we might survive.

Oh Noooo No ! Nooooo.....Feels like a nightmare to me being on this platform since 2016 June ! What a madness !

Why did you disable your witness?
