"Wordsmiths Fiction Week 6: Season 24 – The Mystery of Project Z"

Welcome to another exciting experience courtesy of team wordsmiths. I have no doubt that while some of the prominent inventions of the world are meant to be discovered, others are designed to stay buried for eternity. However, curiosity has never obeyed warnings and threats. This piece is going to be built on the prompt below which centres on an invention that perhaps was to be buried for ages.

The prompt.....

Dineth, very keen on science, spent hours building robots and mixing strange liquids in test tubes in his grandfather's lab. And also spent time reading the science books his grandfather left behind.

One day, while organizing his grandfather’s lab, he found a small metal box with a switch and a note.

"Project Z — Not to be tested. Not ready."

Dineth was surprised, and his eyes lit up with excitement.

What was Project Z? A time travel device? A teleporter? The note didn't mention anything. He took that box and came to his room. He locked the door. Then checked the box with curiosity.

He has no idea. From the next day, he read more of his grandfather's inventions. But always the mystery of the box haunted his mind. One rainy evening, he flipped the switch. But nothing happened. He was disappointed. He thought it was broken. But when he turned to leave, the box lit up and made a soft humming sound. The room was filled with blue light. The walls started to shake. Suddenly, a deep voice came from the box.

Access granted. Beginning transport in 10... 9... 8...

Continuation.....

The number continued counting down and the humming sounds got louder and louder as the room pulsed in absolute blinding blue light. At this point, Dineth stumbled and perhaps might have considered dead as an option. His eyes was flooded with tears and fear became his middle name. At this point, the deep voice from the box never stopped echoing even deeper and more pressing than ever.

"Access granted. Beginning transportation 3...2..1..."

Dineth thought of moving into the world so as to find shelter and behold, a loud crack split the air, and Dineth was taken away. The air landed him sideways on a field. Here in the field, the atmosphere was different, the air was thicker, the sky above was violet, and the trees totally black with glowing veins.

"Where is this?" He whispered to himself. He moved farther away and saw a building that called his name. Yes! The building's Herculean symbol was one he had played with and seen before. But remembering where he saw it was a near impossible thing until the memory of the project Z emblem reflected.

Drawn by curiosity, instinct and confusion as a result of the project Z inscription on the building, he dragged himself towards the Herculean building. To his greatest surprise, the structure was not the only Carrier of the Project Z emblem, but other entities such as the animals and plants has it as well.

"Why are these animals and plants motionless but just staring at me and what could this emblem on them means?"

Was what ran through his mind as he moved closer to the Herculean structure. Upon reaching the structure's entrance, everything became as bluish as the experience he had before his transition and a matured voice commanded "Say your name!". "Dineth!" he responded and behold a wall breaks and form a passage with another inscription"Welcome to Project Z". Inside the structure, the walls were decorated with faint energy and screen flickered rapidly to life as he walked passed. At the centre of the structure was a well decorated region labeled "Project Z Chamber" and there was a man full of cobwebs sitted there.

"This place might have been inaccessible for years" was the thought on Dineth's mind as he walked fearfully and frozen towards the old, gaunt and bearded man who stood motionless awaiting time. Upon moving closer, the motionless and speechless man blinked and whispered "I was wondering when you'd come."

At this point, greater fear filled Dineth as he began to step backward. Upon stepping backward, he discovered that everything operate on a unidirectional as his backwardness still brought him closer to his disappeared grand father.

Dineth could not help but yelled with shock "You disappeared years ago..." As he was about to complete, his grandfather interrupted saying "Yes, the box, Project Z sponsored my trip. A failed attempt to build a nuclear stabilizer metamorphosed into a means of transportation and moved me here into an arena that is beyond my Chemistry"

"But your box brought me here as well" Dineth protested showing anger. "You even left a note that reads not to test it, why didn't you destroy it?" He added as he walks more closer to his grandfather expecting to hear apologies and genuine reasons.

His grandfather replied with a very calmed tone "Destruction wasn't the answer. Rather, the Box as been designed and currently is awaiting one who would continue and make it functionality a reality" Dineth pulse raced. "Continue what? What is it function?"

His grandfather with tears motioned to the central console. "To close the rift. Every time it activates and starts working, it tears the veil between dimensions, makes animals and plants motionless and fearless. I am afraid that if someone turns it on again then automatically, the entire multiverse might be brought to dust."

Immediately he landed his words, the alarm rang madly. "Oh no! The old man said as he turned to Dineth who had activated the system again." The walls of the structure began to fall off and through the transient gap, Dineth could see the motionless animals moving, and the stationed plants move to the direction of winds.

The grand father who was motionless stood up as well and dashed to a broken control panel. "Resetting the core is possible but it actually needs a dual biometric key. You and me can do this" he said.

Without questioning, Dineth joins him and placed his hands on a glowing plate". Abd a voice echoed again "Reset initiated and one chance stabilizing" after minutes, the structure shook violently and a blinding light took over the scene again as though it was a movie thing.

Dineth gasped deeply, sitting up in his own room while the metal box lie hopelessly on the floor speechless like never before. Dineth hands tremble as he reached out to pick the new note placed on it.

"Thank you, Project Z duly terminated and Legacy secured."

Without carefully understanding, he smiled and reached out to his window so as to confirm where exactly he was. Behold, the night air was cool and the sky was dark filled with shining stars. Dineth felt relieved and said to himself

"It was awesome to embark on a journey of saving realities I don't really understand. Indeed, some knowledge, no matter how tempting, comes with a price. And some legacies are not and never meant to be finished, but permanently closed."

Finally, he locked the box, without any form of curiosity but reverence and vowed to keep it pending till when nature wants.
