I'm experimenting with posting some random bits of my genealogy research here.

This individual is a moderately recent ancestor. How recent is recent when it comes to genealogy? Generally, I consider anything post civil war in the U.S. to be pretty modern. Generally, if you can find out the details about your grandparents or maybe great grandparents depending on your age then it often becomes pretty easy to find online records that will get you back to the civil war. Often is not always though. Sometimes records get destroyed. Also, if your ancestors came from another country between now and then, then it may or may not be easy to find those records.

This individual was born before the civil war and lived through it. Records get a little more spotty when you go back that far though it really depends on where they were from. Some areas kept much better records than others.

According to Gramps, this person is my third cousin six times removed.

I'm still exploring Gedsite, a program that takes a gedcom file and converts it into html and The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding which is web based and requires a setup with apache (or other webserver), php and mysql. When it comes to converting this stuff to web pages, every piece of software available seems to have advantages and disadvantages and it is hard to settle on just one. Right now I have a top three. Maybe I'll get it down to a single choice one of these days. One of the things I like about TNG is how you can easily switch between different chart styles. At the top is an example of the "text" ancestor view. I actually quite like the simplicity of this one. Many years ago, I got really used to this style of display for family trees because Rootsweb, one of the first online genealogy sites I made significant use of, displayed trees this way.
